TOS'd 06-21-2013 08:20 PM

is what true?

Carole Caldwell 06-21-2013 08:20 PM

if i pay the fine, does insurance still go up?

It depends. A red light ticket is two points on your license, I believe. That by itself is not going to raise your insurance but if you already have points then your insurance may go up.

I'm not 100% sure though...

Carole Caldwell 06-21-2013 08:30 PM

I dont know. I never experienced that before
It looks like I will be getting the ticket soon. :(

TOS'd 06-21-2013 08:43 PM

Just because you set off the flash does not mean it is a 100% confirmed ticket.

xilley 06-21-2013 08:44 PM

i thought red light tickets dont have points

Carole Caldwell 06-21-2013 08:44 PM

I just started driving. fresh record

Then don't worry. Your insurance won't go up either way if you don't have any points. If you get a ticket just pay up and be more careful next time.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but regarding yellow lights and red...

if you did not have enough time to come to a complete stop when the light turned yellow and the light turned red as you were exiting the intersection, and the camera flashed then you're fine. you're always supposed to stop at a yellow light if you can but if you can not then it is safer to smoothly cross the intersection and not risk slamming on the brakes.

however, if you saw the yellow and gunned it to try and make it through you most likely got caught in the middle of the intersection with the camera.

so if you believe you're innocent and get a ticket ask if they'd mail you a copy of the photo, and take it to court. if they have no copy of the photo for some reason, take it to court since there's no proof on an infraction.

Generally, you can run yellows and the flash won't even go off.

The flash only goes off if you pass the sensor after the light turns red, or very near to it.

You'll also notice that the flash goes off twice, because they take two pictures, to prove you ran the red, and it wasn't a mistake.

But yeah, your insurance won't go up unless you have points on your license from previous tickets, as shown on this page: ICBC | Fines and penalty points for B.C. traffic offences

Running red lights carry 2 points.

OK...the red light camera takes the pictures after the light has turned red for a set period of time. You have to enter the intersection on a red light, not a yellow, for it to function. I also believe they have Radar tied to it to record your speed as well.

The sequence is that the light turns yellow for about 4 seconds then there is a pause of a couple of seconds, then the light goes red, then you enter the intersection with the light being red before you enter, then 2 pictures are taken. NO excuse for running a red.

Either way your insurance does not go up regardless of your tickets... U get driver premium points and all that... Your insurance is only affected by an accident... / close thread

If I remember right red light camera tickets don't carry any points because they have no way of telling who the driver is so the fine is just for the owner of the vehicle to pay. I know this since I got one before :(

While his "insurance" won't go up, with tickets/offences you will get penalty point premiums and driver risk premiums...which you have to pay annually along with your insurance - so it's essentially the same thing as your insurance going up.

And another poster is right - red light cameras do not carry points.

Technically that is correct but on a Red Light Camera ticket, there are no points associated with that as has been stated before, there is no proof of who was driving the vehicle at the time.

I thought the speed was calculated simply by distance travelled (as seen in pictures) divided by time between the two pictures. I really doubt there is a radar in every red light camera and even if there was there is no qualified user to confirm the speed is of the same vehicle in the picture (not target specific).

The camera at Kingsway and E-Broadway flashed me a while back, it was pitch black and raining, the light must have changed just as I passed under a clearly yellow light. Did not have enough room to stop safely, drove through, got a ticket but they sent it to the wrong address, thus no chance to appeal because I never received it. The light was not yellow for very long, much shorter than four seconds for some reason.

Damn it, sometimes technology pisses me off.

if your a new driver and get a red light ticket you'll loose your license I think.

mqin 06-26-2013 02:29 PM

There are no points associated with tickets produced from a red light camera catching you running a red. It is issued to the vehicle owner, not to the operator of the vehicle when running the red. Thus they cannot issue points since there is usually not enough evidence to identify who was driving the vehicle when it actually ran the red light.

However if it's a officer that catches you, and pulls you over to issue you the ticket for running a red, there will be two points behind that to the operator of the vehicle.

And no tickets will not affect your insurance premiums, however depending on what kind of a license you currently hold (class 7 or 5) the allowance for points will be different and so are the rules of what you could/could not do. So for example if you go over the maximum allowance of points per year on your drivers license you will be billed the week before your birthday with the appropriate annual DDP premium.
