Component Speakers and Crossovers
 

Hi!
I've got a 6 channel amp, and a set of component speakers up front in my car.
I'm currently running those speakers with the included passive crossovers, but the amp I'm running has a full crossover section, that could filter channels 1&2 to high pass, and 3&4 to band pass.

If I remember correctly during the installation, all of the speakers in the component set are 4 ohms resistance each, which means the passive crossovers are wired in some way to still deliver 4 ohms to the amplifier.

My question is, can I run without the passive crossovers, and just use the built-in crossover section on the amp safely? (Tweeters to 1&2, woofers to 3&4) It would technically make it an active setup right?

The reasoning for this, is to have more control over the tweeter gain relative to the rest of the car, because they sound very harsh in my current setup.

Yes it would be considered active, do you have a subwoofer as well?

Yessir, 12 inch Sub in the trunk. Amp has a remote line that comes up to the front for adjustment on the fly.

Well, if I have 2 shelf coaxials, at 4 ohms each, I only have one more channel on the amp, so do I run them parallel for 2 ohm resistance, and then just suck up the mono? Or is there some other way to put stereo sound for them? Like running them to the head unit's original hi-outs.

Sounds like you got the idea. Active gives you more control. You just need to make sure to tune it properly and that the xovers on the amp are at the right settings. Otherwise your tweeters may go bye bye.

If you want to hear a true active set-up, listen to any of the cars at our shop. I can't remember the last time any of us used passives in our own rides.
