Independent Insurance Broker?

I've noticed a couple old threads on insurance brokers, but I am looking for more info.

I have an acquaintance that sells/renews auto plan insurance himself, is this what is an independent insurance broker? How do you go about becoming one after the fundamental/CAIB 1 test?

What would be the pros of working independently in contrast to with a firm/company?

A brokerage will typically hire brokers on a per hour basis, then if they show that they bring in a lot of their own clients and are proficient, may negotiate a percentage on the commission - that's probably what your buddy does.

I have a few friends that got exclusive business from dealerships and their own personal clients, working on commission. After years of hustling, they saved up and opened their own brokerage.
