Noise Crack down

I'm sure most riders have heard about it today.

Vancouver Police cracking down on noisy mufflers, exhaust | Globalnews.ca

So, what are the thoughts of riders on this matter?

Saw this in action yesterday night on Knight Street, around I think it was E. 45th ave. Several sport bikes were pulled over and I saw the VPD officer testing the noise level.

LOLOLOLOLOLO I'm probably well over 91db. But how can they test a scooter with a CVT? I can't hold it at 5000rpm without riding away.

So if its too loud do you get a VI? Or just a ticket.

saw this on the vpd facebook feed today...have mixed feelings about it.

on 1 hand, yeah, I live on a busy street so hearing them come from 5 blocks away at 2am is kinda annoying.

but being a rider myself, I find that I need the loud exhaust to let retards know that im in the area.

they were also talking about how riders were using ear plugs and couldn't hear emergency vehicles and that it was a no no....well...in PRS a few years ago, they told us to ride with ear plugs, saying if we lower what we can hear, we're more observant of our surroundings etc.

It doesn't have a centre stand. So I don't think I would get very far with that.

Wait. I would get too far with that. Lol

My Mana has a CVT on it as well.

And a Leo Vince exhaust guess Vancouver is off the route.

At WCSS the only bike Bez could hear over his race bike was mine, but I was pushing the upper levels of the RPM range

If they can't test it, you will most likely get a VI, which is just as bad because you need to get it inspected at a shop THEY choose, which will be at least a hundred bucks or so..... so it's a lose lose.

Also can be dinged for this,

Division 7A — Noise from Motor Vehicles
Prohibition

7A.01 No person shall start, drive, turn or stop any motor vehicle, or accelerate the vehicle engine while the vehicle is stationary, in a manner which causes any loud and unnecessary noise in or from the engine, exhaust system or the braking system, or from the contact of the tires with the roadway.

Under 7A.01, seems like it could be subjective, without having to using s dB reader.

From what I understand, the chart posted above is a guideline for what is accepted. If you are pulled over you can get a Vt for unnecessary noise, OR a Notice and Order compelling you to get your vehicle inspected. I guess it's up to officer discretion.

I wonder how far away they measure the DB.

Because talking loud and directly into a DB meter = 90+db easily.

Hopefully at least 2-3 meters.

It's supposed to be 1 metre away, 1 metre in the air, at a 45 degree angle to the exhaust tip

I understand that the rider wants to be as noticeable as possible, but living on a pretty busy street in tokyo I have to say, WAY too many people take it WAY overboard.

The fucking WORST are those ugly flashy scooters, usually driven by manual labourers. They are not only ridiculously loud, but the CVT means they make a constant peak level noise... I'm sure they specifically tune the exhaust to be at its loudest point at that RPM. That is way more annoying than shifting through gears.

So a crackdown seems fair... 91 db seems like it ought to be enough to make your presence without annoying the public

And BTW 91 is WAY louder than 83 already. Remember that dB is measured on a logarithmic scale.
