Is Mitsubishi Lancer better than my Toyota Matrix

Hi guys

I am driving my Matrix 09 and would like to upgrade to a better car.

I would like to know whether Lancer any good ?

Go test drive it and see for yourself.

It depends what transmission.. CVT in general are horrible on driving experience but better on gas.

Define "better."

Although its looks are questionable and I'm personally not a fan of them, the current generation Matrix drives alright, especially with the 5spd.

The Lancer on the other hand, is quite an old platform that hasn't been refreshed since 2007. It's a rather anemic car, especially with its horrid CVT that's probably one of the worst CVTs out on the market at the moment.

I'd say keep your Matrix.

OP, you don't happen to know anything about a "KIA Sedona LS9", do you? :troll:

Did your Toyota Matrix lose to a Mitsubishi Lancer?

mos_skeeto 07-17-2013 09:35 PM

I owned a Lancer. It's an alright car but I don't see why it would be an upgrade over a Matrix.

smarv 07-17-2013 09:52 PM

I own a 08 lancer and its a "good" car. I use the term good loosely, while its good on gas, reliable and cheap to maintain it still has its downsides. Its not very powerful especially in the form of a cvt. Its also not very comfortable I have the gts model which comes with stock 18'' wheels and with its suspension you feel every bump as if its magnified. Don't get me wrong its still a decent car, I would still choose it over a matrix.

Matrix > Lancer

Both are econoboxes but the Matrix wins hands down in practicality

I wouldn't make that change (I hesitate to say 'upgrade').

If the car is just for commuting/practicality, stick with the matrix. If you really want to upgrade to something 'nicer' from an enthusiast perspective, I wouldn't pick the lancer.

Akinari 07-18-2013 12:28 AM

OP should trade in '09 Matrix for a 2ZZ Matrix XRS :troll:

Lancer isn't an upgrade.

Spoiler!

Might as well wait until the new Mazda 3 comes out for you to test drive before jumping the gun

I haven't driven the Lander much, but I find the Matrix to be incredibly boring to drive, the electric power steering doesn't let you glide the steering wheel back to center, and the driving feel just has a dead vibe to it. It is cargo-friendly and reliable though.

Toyota in general likes to crank up the power steering. The lancer's power steering is marginally less assisted however it won't really fix the issues you mentioned. I traded my Lancer in for a Scion tC which has more power steering assist but it's more fun to drive because of added torque, responsive automatic transmission and suspension. I would look at a mazda 3 as other posters mentioned. It's a good balance of fun and practicality. It also sucks to drive a car that's been out since 2008 because it's like buying a new used car. (NSX and RSX aside)

Lancer is surprisingly roomy in the rear seats compared to the Matrix.

EDIT: Oh, and Lancers don't hold their value well compared to a Matrix.

I wonder which engine/transmission the OP has on his Matrix.

This.

Toyota likes its drivers to have the option of steering with one finger. Both the Corolla and the Matrix have ridiculously light steering, which in turn makes the car rather tossable and fun in a masochistic fashion.

JesseBlue 07-18-2013 04:11 PM

go for the beige corolla....fun fun fun

save a bit more money to get a lancer ralliart. doesnt have cvt. has awd. and flat folding rear seats.

Leopold Stotch 07-19-2013 12:33 AM

i find the matrix less annoying to drive.

i jumped into a matrix knowing what to expect

i drove a lancer was quite thoroughly disappointed.

but don't get a car because people say it's better, do it because you like it.
