edit. mistaken. i mentioned it was in edmonton.

LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. — Six people died in a collision involving a semi and another vehicle, RCMP said Saturday.

Initially police said seven were dead, but they lowered the number to six after investigators were further able to examine the car involved in the crash.

This is why he is currently under arrest and under police investigation. No terrorism or mechanical failure to blame here... just plain stupidity.

That particular train is capable of over 300KPH. IIRC when I was in Spain going from Barcelona to the Basque region the indicated speed on the LCD TV's was 320KPH. So why would 200+KPH speedo photo matter?

It's the fact that this train was on conventional track not banked high speed track.

BBC News - Spain train driver 'on phone' at time of deadly crash

Coles Notes:
According to the black box, the driver was on the phone with the railway company getting instructions and likely lost track of where he was as he was consulting papers. He applied the brakes but it was too late.

XplicitLuder 07-30-2013 05:41 PM

ya apparently he was on the phone and going 150km/hr ?

xpl0sive 07-30-2013 06:07 PM

It matters because the track has a speed limit of 80km/h......

They seem to be "looking" for any reason to pin this on the driver. Why would he be on the phone with staff before the crash? Are there procedures about communicating with drivers while they're actually driving?

People seem to have forgotten the backup system to brake the train DIDN'T WORK.

No, that particular corner has a limit of 80km/hr. On the straights those trains get going at a fairly high rate of speed.

Ignoring the fail safe system for the moment, the conductor has to brake a few miles in advance of a corner in order to get through it safely. If the driver was distracted while figuring out details with their office, missing that braking point by even a minute can be the difference between disaster and a safely executed turn.
