Car battery reads 0 volts, and will not charge. Did my battery die??

Yup the car wasn't driven for 1.8 months, i tried to start it up today but it didn't work.... So then i thought ok all i need to do is charge it up with the crappy moto master battery charger but it doesnt charge, it just flashes 8 8 8.... so i thought ok maybe i should check the voltage with my volt meter... and it reads 0, yes 0...

Is my battery garbage now??? the battery is only less than 1 year old.. what a piece of....

well you let it die... if it was grounded then it would have been losing a charge the whole time it was hooked up...

so in short, yes it is dead. next time start the car once every 2 weeks at least, and disconnect the ground from the battery if you are going to let it sit.

Iceman-19 08-16-2013 10:48 PM

Yes essentially it is. Your battery is flat. A dead battery read 12.0 volts.

Lomac 08-16-2013 10:56 PM

Yup, that battery is toast.

You can try and rejuvenate it by hooking it up for a slow, deep charge, but even if it works it wont be as good as when new.

so i need to buy new battery??? does warrenty cover this??

Iceman-19 08-16-2013 10:57 PM

You can always try. Worst they will tell you is no.

corollagtSr5 08-16-2013 10:58 PM

If you have a receipt, you can try.

weed-man 08-16-2013 11:08 PM

hmm yeah might as well, i have to recycle it anyways.. thanks all..

fliptuner 08-16-2013 11:33 PM

Where'd you buy the battery from? And what car is this?

Geoc 08-17-2013 10:00 AM

My friend left his headlights on one night, and my meter tested it to be around 1.5v. We jumped it, and it charged back up just fine.

I've always thought anything below 10v is a dead battery, but turns out, it's not always the case.

punkwax 08-17-2013 10:10 AM

1.8 months hey...

dink 08-23-2013 11:09 AM

if the battery is below 11.6 volts, then it is drained and will not hold a charge.

Next time, disconnect the battery and hook it up to the charger.
Unless you're able to take the car out for a long drive once a week.

I guess I'll hijack this thread since mystery is solved.

Even when I disconnect my ground, the battery will eventually die in a week or ten days. Is my battery garbage too? If I drive the car everyday, I don't notice anything. Usually I'm forced to leave it on a charger so this doesn't happen.

Time for a new battery before it leaves you stranded.
