Supporting animal rescues?
 

Since FB is apparently full of useless, oblivious twits, I think I'll see if RS's animal-loving community can step up to the plate here.

Now I know there are lots of great, worthy rescues that all need our support, but I wanna put in a plug for a local one that really needs some help: https://www.facebook.com/groups/18136122526/

It's run by an amazing woman who is currently caring for something like 34 dogs, mostly on her own, with sporadic volunteer help. She also works weekends at the Delta Community Animal Shelter. Suffice to say, her entire life pretty much revolves around helping animals.

And right now she's in a pinch: she has massive vet bills, as well as darling little Allie, who's had a gimped leg since it was injured as a pup and never tended to, and so needs an amputation. She put out the call on her FB group for her almost 700 members to just kick in a measly $10 each, which would be enough to cover all the vet bills and Allie's surgery.

And so far she's been disappointed: about 60 people have donated to a total of under $2000, and while that helps a lot, it means less than 10% of group members have stepped up.

She's really feeling burnt out these days from the lack of funds and lack of help and it would give her a real boost if some donations would start coming in again. She does amazing work with the dogs in her charge and needs all the energy she can get - we visited her "farm" on the weekend and it's just incredible everything she does there.

So come on guys, who wants to help show RS >> FB?? :)

Also, if you or anyone you know is looking for a dog, she has lots of them for adoption and/or foster, small, medium and large, including puppies from a dog who was surrendered when pregnant - adoption fees go directly back to supporting the whole thing!

Oh wow, she has tons of small dogs up for adoption. You rarely see small dogs up for adoption, let alone so many from one place.

[edit] I love seeing all these animal rescues and the amount of work they put into ensuring these dogs find their forever home, but part of me always ends up depressed at the fact that all these great dogs were abandoned by their owners. :(

What is she doing for fundraisers? My wife works for Hong Kong Dog Rescue, and they are pretty well known in the city for doing a LOT of fundraisers. Every month they have huge events, whether it's for kids (sponsored by Disney) or adults. One thing they do well is appealing to the mega rich crowd.

If you want to help but can't donate cash, consider arranging a fundraiser of some sort. Also see if you can find someone who will do weekly adoption meets, where people can just show up and play with the puppies and take one home if they like one. HKDR has success with that too

She has an online auction going with donated goods and services from her group members, but it takes time, as do most fundraising efforts, so she's limited into how much she can put into it.

We kicked in $50 last pay period, and this weekend I'm picking up the mower attachment for her tractor to take it in for warranty service - she has a huge field for the dogs to play in, but it's starting to get overgrown because the mower has been down.

Yeah, she's a softie that regularly brings them in from high-kill shelters and the like. She has a thing for the hard cases, the ones who need special care and such... which of course, ends up costing extra, but she's got some incredible :tears: inducing success stories out of them.

If we didn't have strata limits, we'd probably have taken in half a dozen of her dogs by now... met Bambi when we were there the other day and just fell in love, she's SO cuddly for a chihuahua.

Not all of them are... and some are surrendered for valid reasons. Our latest addition Taffy, for example, spent her entire 12 years with an older couple until the wife got really sick and the husband simply couldn't care for both of them. It's apparent that he tried to do it for a long time, but just couldn't manage, as she was pretty badly in need of grooming and a teeth cleaning when he surrendered her to the shelter... they said he was heartbroken and shaking when he signed her over. She's such a spunky little gem - I can see why it would have been so hard to give her up.

I can tell from poor dogs that have fractured legs and require amputation :(

I gave up a dinner and donated some money to her.

+1. HKDR is also a non-profit dog rescue center run by a woman (Sally) in Hong Kong with over 400 dogs. I was touched deeply by Sally's efforts to help every single dog she encounters and in 2 years, I've adopted 3 full grown huskies from them and have donated numerous times.

There are many ways to improve the situation but I think the most important one is to educate people and actually go ahead and adopt instead of buying a puppy. Sure, everyone knows that a puppy is cute but nothing is more satisfying than giving a new life to these abandoned or unwanted dogs and making them feel that they have a home. From my 25 years of experience with dog caring, full grown adopted dogs are the easiest to train and the love they give back is priceless. You just need to know how to train them. Previous owners always have the shittest excuses but at the end of the day its the owner's fault and selfishness that causes the dog's suffering.

Donations can only help so much when DR's are continuously growing in volume. If people don't have the space or money, volunteering makes all the difference for these organizations.

The sad reality is that a lot of these dogs will never leave the rescue center due to their age, breed, or personalities. These dogs need a lot of care ie grooming, walks, food, and medical but with a good staff of volunteers, these dogs can at least call the center their homes.

I'm a huge supporter of animal rescues and a supporter for charities who help against animal cruelty. In terms of fundraising, do you think Kickstarter would work? Offering a calendar with the dogs from the rescue as the reward for donating might generate some donation dollars. I see some challenges which include making a short video clip, taking high quality images of the dogs, and the costs of printing the calendars.

Also if she is registered with Canada Revenue Agency she can start receiving donations from chimp.net. Chimp is an excellent way to donate to charities and i think her non-profit organization would benefit from it.

She IS registered as a non-profit... she used some online donation setup like CHIMP once (might have even been CHIMP, I don't remember) and found they took too big a cut. :seriously:

Since both of these ladies have similar backgrounds and intentions, I advise you to contact Sally at HKDR (she's white btw) and see what info you can get from her. I'm sure she's very busy but she will help to her best ability. Sally's more than qualified to offer guidance in building a strong DR center.

Soundy - you said she is registered as a non-profit? Is there a way to get a hold of her. My work is looking for a dog rescue that might want to bring some dogs out on our adoption days. It's good exposure as we are a high volume place and do not sell dogs or cats
