Remote Desktop Software help...

Background:

Me and my dad run a small home business. He needs help with a lot of the computer based stuff (which is %75 of the work) so I'm usually around to help him normally by doing most of the computer work.

Situation:

I am going to be out of town for a few months, and we have just gotten a few more jobs for the next month. He is going to need me to do the computer stuff that I normally do while I am away.

What I need:

A software that I can use to access the desktop computer at home from my laptop to help him out while I am away. I am on a Mac OSX laptop and the desktop is running Windows 8 x64. I have bootcamped Windows 7 on my laptop if cross platform software is not available. I am going to need full access to the computer remotely from my laptop, such as hard drives, usb devices, portable hard drives, etc.

What program do you guys recommend for this? Free is best if it is available, however I do not mind paying for this. I know there is a bunch of software out there that can do this, but I'm hoping some of you have used them and can have a recommendation for me. I need something solid and that can be used for long periods of time as well.

If you're doing basic stuff, then Chrome is fine. No extra software needed, just the browser and a plugin

logmein
teamviewer

i use these 2 programs the most to assist users for work remotely

I use Cord. Its free and allows me to access windows desktops using RDP from my work Mac Mini.

Teamviewer is good in a pinch but I find it a bit slow.

I can't seem to figure out CoRD... Any way you can help me configure it?

Chrome didn't work for you? It worked just as well as the others for me, except without the crappy software required to install and have running

I'll try Chrome tomorrow.

I have had some pretty good experience with Team Viewer, and I find the speed / response time to be quite acceptable.

logmein is what i'm using to keep my office network operating while i'm away from Canada
Since we have so many users we bought the pro version. It's good and lets my coworkers work from home as well

danned 09-14-2013 06:59 AM

get logmein....

TOS'd 09-14-2013 08:45 AM

++1 logmein

also you can use the app(i use android, dunno if they have one for ios) logmein ignition on your smart phone or tablet to access your home pc running logmein.

lilaznviper 09-14-2013 02:16 PM

the free version is enough to get you through but if you need the pro version you can try as there is a trail version for a couple of days

Sorry I didn't realize you didn't already have RDP setup on your windows machine. The other methods suggested by the guys in this thread will probably be a bit easier.

I find it more user friendly because Microsoft's client seems half assed in the ui department.
