1 killed, 3 injured as motorcyle collides with students outside Surrey high school

This is real scary..i mean, you hear about vehicles/cars/trucks hitting people but this was a motor cycle.

RIP to the female who passed away... there are no clues as to what happened although some 'assume' a case of jay walking.

1 killed, 3 injured as motorcyle collides with students outside Surrey high school

One girl is dead after a crash involving a motorcyle and three students near Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey on Wednesday. The driver, and two other teen girls are in hospital.

The crash happened at about 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of 128th Street and 68th Avenue.

Police say the motorcyclist was southbound on 128th when the bike collided with the three students. Two people were taken to Surrey Memorial Hospital and two were airlifted to a different hospital.

When asked if the students were jaywalking, police said they were investigating all possibilities.

Surrey School District spokesman Doug Strachan was unable to provide details of what happened but confirmed that students were involved in the crash.

In an email to The Province, a student reported seeing a motorcycle speed past the school and then a crashing sound.

“I went and had a look. He had crashed and the three girls were lying on the road and their shoes were off their feet,” wrote the student, who did not want his name used.

He described the situation at the school as “Code Red,” which according to Surrey School District’s safety alert system involves “a perceived life-threatening emergency either inside or in close proximity to the school building.” The school was re-opened after a short time.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and have 128th Street closed between 72nd and 68th avenues.

RIP.

I drive by a highschool (coincidentally the one I went to) everyday to/from work, and there are always kids who think they're tougher than 2 tons of steel.

I probably felt the same when I was 15, but please be careful out there, whether you're driving or walking.

we have all heard someone say "if they hit me i will just sue them"
it kinda put an idea in to many younger peoples head that you can cross when and where you want to.. unfortunately bikes and cars dont stop as quickly as people assume.

RIP

also should put an idea in the heads of people who think they can avoid certain unexpected obstacles at certain speeds. This is the exact reason why there are speed limits.

I'm not familiar with the area, but does this section of the street not have the 30km/h limit?

RIP

RIP
Most high schools don't have the 30km/h limit, because high schoolers should know better than to jaywalk without checking for traffic.

Regardless, RIP to the girl who passed away, and hopefully everyone else recovers quickly.

They were little kids you guys...little girls crossing the street coming back from lunch and heading back to school. I've driven down that street 100s of times, when school is over and during lunch and in the morning, the area is PACKED with kids.

2 lanes of traffic going both ways, 4 lanes in total and dividers in between. Poor visibility is an issue at certain places on this stretch for drivers turning in and out of the complexes there and the lack of a cross walk nearby (if memory serves correct).

Either way, a sad loss of young life, totally unnecessary and could've been avoided in several ways, I'm sure. Only time will tell if any negligence was involved with the rider.

RIP. Even if the bike was only doing 30km/h at the time of impact that would be lethal if it was a direct impact and not just a clip.
Kids pay attention when crossing the street you do not hold authority over physics

No crosswalk in sight - looks like a clear cut case of jaywalking.

But it hurts to see what appears to be bits of clothing lying on the ground.

RIP.

What is a "case of jaywalking?" I'm not following.

I remember this one time when I was fairly new on my bike, I almost fell of on King George Highway. I was riding the speed limit approaching 64th avenue, when a bum decided to walk across the street out of no where. I acted quick tried to switch lanes and did and the guy decided to switch back to that lane too and got in my way again. I managed to just ride around him and didn't clip him but I remember being so angry at him. Not because I would've hurt him but because I would've been put in a situation where I could take a life because someone else decided not to pay attention to the road. Not something I would want to live with, especially if I ride with care. Not saying this is what happened here but it's my thoughts on jaywalking; even though I do it.

Cross walk or not the driver of the bike shouldnt of been flying down a street during lunch hours at a high school. They teach defensive driving for a reason and hopefully he wasn't showing off to a bunch of LG's.

So fricken sad seeing shit like this when it's so preventable.

Under the MVA, it isn't illegal to cross between intersections. But as a pedestrian who is crossing or "jaywalking", you are supposed to yield to any vehicles.... That said, vehicles are supposed to attempt to avoid them even if the pedestrian is crossing in a non designated pedestrian walkway... This is why I think it should be illegal for pedestrians to cross at non designated spots...

You would think if this was an area by a school, there would be more pedestrian crossings.

Depends on your definition of "little kids". For me, high school teenagers are not little kids.

Thanks. I wasn't following what he meant by it. It almost made me think that he thought that jaywalking = automatic fault. The driver, if negligent, can still be at fault and charged civilly and criminally.

Well, compared to me, high school teenagers are little kids so I guess it's all perspective.

A young/prime adult, according to Erik Erikson's stages of human development, is generally a person in the age range of 20 to 40, whereas an adolescent is a person aging from 13 to 19,[1][2] although definitions and opinions vary. The young adult stage in human development precedes middle adulthood. A person in the middle adulthood stage ages from 40 to 64. In old age, a person is 65 years old or older.[3]

not directly related to this case but people really need to understand where a "Crosswalk" applies

because a crosswalk is ACROSS an intersection or street doesnt mean that where you are crossing acts the same as the crosswalk in the adjecent intersection, i see this all time time people forcing me to yield or other vehicles because they just step out into an intersection acting as though they have the right of way even though they are not using the actual crosswalk

Who said the bike was "flying" anywhere dipshit?

And the accident happened at the intersection of 68 and 128. Nowhere near the school which is at 72 and 128.

Happened to me downtown on Granville the last couple days with crosswalks! the lights still green for me but someone darts out in front of me at a crosswalk if i hadn't slammed on the brakes there would be 2 news stories of dead/seriously injured pedestrians the last couple days -_-

one guy even had the gall to look at me as if to say "what? come on i dare ye" and im thinking

gosh ive seen a young male that looked like he was going to be late for class and ran across the street with an incoming suv that was roughly 20 ft away! balls i tell you, balls.
