But seriously...there's a lot of instability in neighboring Somalia. When the UIC crushed the infighting warlords a few years ago, they set up an Afghanistan-style regime of Islamic justice across the whole country. The US and Ethiopia was all like "nah, fuck that" and decided to intervene, pushing the UIC out of power. Back to square one! Running gun battles in the streets of Mogadishu!

Ethiopia had a lot to lose because the ruling class is Orthodox Christian and the military was suppressing an uprising in the Ogaden region. Ogaden borders Somalia and is 99% Muslim, and there was a risk that the UIC would further radicalize the rebels, destabilizing the country as a whole. Or something.

This reminds me of what happened in Mumbai in 2008. That was Pakistan-trained terrorists demanding an end to US influence in the region and the setting up of an Islamic state in the Indian subcontinent. Especially the part where they asked hostages questions about Islam and killed those that couldn't answer...chilling. They did the same thing in Mumbai.

Here, despite their best intentions, they ended up killing 3 Muslims. Nice going!
