Replace logic board 2010 MacBook or buy a MacBook Air?

Hey guys,

My May 2010 MacBook Pro 13" (2.66/4gb ram/320 gb hard drive )won't turn on anymore. I dropped it off at the apple Genius Bar yesterday for diagnosis. The tech called me back and said it looks like it's the logic board. The cost of repair is $580 after tax. The repair would have a 90 day warranty. They do not have the logic board in stock and would have to order it.

The second option is to forgo fixing the computer and replacing it with an apple refurb Haswell MacBook Air 13 w/ 4gb ram and 128gb SSD. I like this option bc of the 12 hour battery, faster hard drive and it's smaller/lighter frame. It would be under $1050 after tax. I am not really worried about the storage size as I have an external 1tb drive. This would have a full one year warranty plus it gets another year warranty with my credit card.

I use my computer for surfing the web, watching movies, looking at pictures, etc. nothing too computer processor challenging I think.

What do you think I should do?

Get a Haswell MBA.

The performance increase will be very noticeable coming from a 2010 MBP.

$500 to fix a 3 year old laptop with only 3 month warranty doesn't sound cost effective.
even if you dont need the performance of Haswell it's very power efficient = significant battery life improvement

Try bringing it to one of those independent computer repair stores - some of those chinese places will do it for a lot cheaper than $580. If the rest of the laptop is in half decent condition - you can always sell it once it's fixed.

In general - all computer repairs through Apple are pretty pricey.

Its the logic board itself that will be $$$, then labor on top. Anything over $300 for a notebook is not work fixing.

Logic board is like the majority of the laptop. $600 is so not worth it. Buy a replacement.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

Or you could buy a PC for $500 and sell your mac for parts.
