is there one common phone number that i can call to report? i remember being told 911 is not the number to use. or do i have to remember every non-emergency phone number for each police department in each city or municipality that i happen to be driving in where the the incident is happening?

that's what i'm trying to ask.

so for example i'm passing through port moody on my way home in vancouver and i suddenly see this happen in front of my in my car, i would have to try and search on my smartphone for port moody police's non-emergency hotline, and in the meantime the guy has already been run over and the other driver is long gone?

... and if that cop is within 'pen-throw-distance' -- don't use a pen to get his attention to tell him about the road rage incident -- he may rear end you then run you over

if it's not an emergency, copy down the plate, and call later when you are home or pulled over safely. If you believe your safety or the safety of others is in danger, call 911. in the link you posted, 911 could have been the number to call if you were a witness or directly involved, imo.

does calling operator "0" directory "411" work? will they connect you immediately, or will they just give you a phone number and you dial it on your own?

I think you are over thinking this. If you are that concerned, add the non emerg lines for your the respective depts in the city that you frequent often, in your phonebook.. Vpd, richmond rcmp, etc. Honestly, if the small chance you got pulled over for using your phone while driving due to a similar incident as the on you linked, I am sure the police officer would understand.

i witnessed a road rage incident on hwy 91 about a month ago where 2 SUVs were chasing each other. i was in the slow lane and the chase vehicle passed me on the shoulder. they were going so fast ther was no license plates to be read. wished i could just push the bluetooth button and say "call police hotline" or something like that and not have to worry about phone numbers. but like you said i guess i'm overthinking this.

description of vehicles. last direction of travel. and time delay. with that info hopefully cops in surrounding areas will be able to intercept. or if they were driving recklessly, other drivers will call in and someone might have have gotten a plate. only so much you can do.

or you just move on with your day and stop trying to be a hero

And this is the fucked up attitude people have that will drive away from accidents, walk away from someone getting beat up and turn a blind eye to crimes happening right in front of them.

There is a big difference between being Joe Hero and doing what is right..

[edit] i am wrong. according to soundy in the OP, he says you are supposed to call 911 and the operator will decide whether it is an emergency or not.

i had based my concerns on a news report i had read awhile back that spoke of someone trying to use 911 to report a reckless driver but was told by the responding 911 operator to call the non-emergency police number instead as this did not constitute as an emergency.

I've seen 2 of them. I just called 911. both incidents saw the drivers of the respective vehicles leave the car and confront each other. While holding up traffic.

One of them started out as weaving dangerously in and out of traffic.

IMO, no road rage incident is one that doesn't risk the safety of myself or others.
It may start small, but it only takes a split second for it to all go wrong. (I'm talking about the physical confrontations and the irratic driving, etc).

If there's something major going on.... that could potentially endanger the lives of other people on the road... then I would be calling 911.

If they don't think it's an emergency (and I've called a lot... only once have they said this...) They transfer you to emergency.

Tip: If you're on Hwy 1, ask for Hwy 1 Freeway Patrol and SPECIFY THE CITY!!
