Protesters face a line of officers in Rexton, N.B., as police began enforcing an injunction to end a demonstration against shale gas exploration in eastern New Brunswick on October 17, 2013.

Police in Canada have arrested around 40 people in a clash with protesters demonstrating against shale gas explorations in eastern New Brunswick.

On Thursday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) attacked the protesters trying to dismantle a highway barricade in the region.

"The RCMP is coming in here with their tear gas - they even had dogs on us," said Susan Levi-Peters, the former chief of the nearby Elsipogtog aboriginal reserve, adding, "They were acting like we're standing there with weapons, while we are standing there, as women, with drums and eagle feathers.”

Reports say that the protesters set several police vehicles on fire during the clash.

The Elsipogtog chief and some of the reserve's council members were reportedly among those arrested by the police.

The incident came after activists and local aboriginals blocked a road near the town of Rexton around a week to show their opposition to shale gas explorations by SWN Resources Canada, a subsidiary of Southwestern Energy Co, in the area.

wow fuck off these protests ARE FAR FROM peaceful.

You think they call RCMP snipers for people holding up signs? They are disrupting society and becoming VIOLENT.

CharlesInCharge 10-18-2013 11:40 AM

Are you saying the government owns that land in the first place to bring in the army?

meowjinboo 10-18-2013 12:10 PM

RCMP not army.

Fact: You own shit in this world. Play their game, or die.

CharlesInCharge 10-18-2013 12:27 PM

Whats the difference for the first nations... they are confronted by a foreign armed force, thus army.

Another fact is that first nations can have guns too, so its not a guaranteed one sided killing.

They are blockading traffic and not allowing people to go on with their business, they are being violent and unruly.

I think I saw that they started torching police cars at this protest.

Edit: Yup

Officers who shut down a shale gas protest in New Brunswick on Thursday found bombs containing shrapnel, firearms with a large amount of ammunition, knives and bear spray among the protesters, a top RCMP official says.

“The weapons and explosives we seized show that this was no longer a peaceful protest and there was a serious threat to public safety,” Assistant commissioner Roger Brown said on Friday.

...

The Mounties said Molotov cocktails were tossed at them and they fired non-lethal sock rounds — beanbag type bullets — and pepper spray to defuse the situation. But Brown said no officers discharged their firearms at any point Thursday.

He said officers discovered a number of weapons at the encampment including improvised explosive devices, firearms and knives.

The RCMP blocked Route 134 on Sept. 29 after a protest there began spilling onto the road. Protesters subsequently cut down trees that were placed across another part of the road, blocking the entrance to the compound.

The protesters want SWN Resources to stop seismic testing and leave the province.

SWN Resources issued a statement Friday saying it is in the early stages of exploration in New Brunswick.

“Our employees are dedicated to the safety of people and the environment, as well as ensuring we are in full compliance with all regulations,” it said.
