Paid sick leave

So my company said im entitled to a few paid sick leave per year. And I havent used any yet.

Do I have to be legitmately sick to get the paid sick leave? (doctors note) or can I just request it off?

radioman 11-03-2013 01:15 PM

not sure if srs....

its company policy based.

where i work, if i call in sick 3 or more days consecutively, i am required to get a doctors note if i am asked to.

just call in sick and find out. nothing beats a paid day off :D

tiger_handheld 11-03-2013 07:43 PM

call in sick on a monday .. say you were sick all weekend.

don't call sick mid week n go back next day - way to fishy..

Matlock 11-03-2013 07:50 PM

If I get sick and want to get paid I have to use one of my vacation days up.

Remember being sick doesn't necessarily mean you've got showing symptoms like a fever, coughing, drowsiness whatever.

Lately I just tell my work I got a headache or can't stop pooping

Just tell them you have to eat, sleep, rave, repeat.

Is this real life? Honest to Christ I'm trying to keep an open mind and be respectful that maybe some people have a little more common sense then others but what a stupid fucking question.

Are you usually only sick for "a day"? No. If you are going to fake it, do it right. Take 2-3 days off as most illnesses (colds/flus) are 2-3 days unless you want to just tell them you had diarrhea.

Being sick for one day literally means, "I had the shits".

radioman 11-04-2013 09:59 AM

Man I almost used one of my paid sick leave days this morning. Too cold to get out of bed.

melloman 11-04-2013 10:49 AM

Best thing is to check company policy, I have 3 days/year for paid sick leave. Kind of lame that it's only 3, but it's better then nothing.

Sick day excuses:

Food poisoning (1 day)
Explosive Diarrhea (1 day+)
Headache/Migraine/Dizzy/Nausea (1 day+)
Cold/Flu (3 days+)

You don't have to be dying to call in sick. I've gone to work sick before, and always regret it. Now when I'm not feeling tiptop, I just call in/email.

punkwax 11-04-2013 11:09 AM

Just tell them you have something wrong with your eyes. When they ask what, just say, "I'm not really sure, I just don't see my ass coming into work today."

Let us know how that goes :)

dinosaur 11-04-2013 11:50 AM

pink eye is also a good excuse....super contagious, clears pretty quickly, and you don't need to fake a "cough" or the sniffles.

radioman 11-04-2013 12:21 PM

^ What if they say you can't take the day off because you have important business accounts to close that day. They will see your eyes not red. Do you give yourself pinkeye before going in?

Got to do anything for those business accounts.

Business accounts.

punkwax 11-04-2013 01:17 PM

I had an employee who used pink eye as an excuse at least once, maybe 2-3 times per year for many years. His nickname became Scotty Pinkeye.

Do yourself a favour, don't be the guy who fakes sick. Your employer and fellow coworkers aren't stupid. You won't get much respect and are usually at the bottom of the list when a promotion comes around.

My job is nothing but deadlines, when I have stuff due I have to work one way or the other. I can work from home if need be and when I'm sick that's usually what I'll do, at least when I have stuff closing. If I don't have anything closing right away and I think I can get away with it and still make my deadlines then hello couch goodbye office.

Generally I hate working from home, I find it hard to get anything done there are to many distractions and I don't have the discipline to work full days.

OP, you should just call in and tell them you would like to use your sick days as paid time off it's totally cool and absolutely acceptable. Make sure you call in like a boss and if they give you any lip tell them you get it how you live.

dinosaur 11-04-2013 05:30 PM

When I worked a more traditional job I always found I worked WAY better at home...with no distractions and office crap I accomplished so much more. I am not one to have a whole lot of discipline, but it was quite the opposite working from home....maybe I was trying to prove it to myself.

Whenever someone asks if you'd like a special cookie, make sure it's laced with the good stuff and not Metamucil... ;)

Seriously? You think the day to get away with faking sick day is NEW YEARS?

Grow up. If you want the day off, take the day off - unpaid. Does nobody have even the smallest sense of doing what is actually right rather than just trying to scam the system all the time?

REALLY! You are going to fake sick on New Year's Eve? How stupid do you think your employer is? I am seriously asking you how stupid do you think your employer is?

My favourite part of your question is " So my company said im entitled to a few paid sick leave per year. And I havent used any yet."

E N T I T L E D.

So what are you entitled to? How many days do they say you are entitled to?

If you haven't taken any and you are entitled to 5, fu(k just New Years, take the last 5 days of the year. You are ENTITLED to them after all.

Let me rephase what another poster said above....
Your boss has had many employees who used various sickness from pink eye, diarrhoea, cramps, headache, food poisoning, shingles, flu, dental issues, and my personal favorite a sexually transmitted disease as an excuses.

Do yourself a favour, don't be the guy who fakes sick. Your employer and fellow coworkers aren't stupid. You won't get much respect and are usually at the bottom of the list when a promotion/raises/bonuses comes around however you will be at the top of the list if there is any downsizing.

Have a fabulous New Year's Eve!

stewie 11-17-2013 10:13 PM

if your able to bank overtime hours at your job...just use those hours as a "paid sick day" but have it labeled as day off/holiday. shouldn't matter what day you use it on as long as its given a bit of notice (if its a day where lots of others plan on taking that day off...nye).
