CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Highway 1 is closed westbound at the Vedder Canal Bridge after a serious crash.

RCMP say the smoke caused a distraction, resulting in a rapid slowdown of traffic and an “accordion effect,” as vehicles slammed into one another.

We’re now told 17 vehicles were involved, and 14 people have been taken to various hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

Greyhound Bus Highway 1 Crash“We don’t have any reports of fatalities,” says Inspector Tim Shields.

“We are warning commuters to avoid the area of Highway 1 in Chilliwack and take an alternative route,” adds Shields.

Crews are watching for any spilled fuel that may be leaking into the waterway.

Greyhound says the bus that was involved in the crash was on its way to Vancouver from Kamloops.

“There were 36 passengers on-board, plus one driver. I can confirm that there were five minor injuries,” says Alex Pedrini with Greyhound.

The company says it is cooperating with police, as well as doing its own independent investigation.

Eastbound traffic has re-opened after an hour-long closure at No. 1 Road.

Westbound traffic is expected to remain blocked until this afternoon.

Apparently there was a campfire under the bridge and the smoke reduced visibility on the bridge. So it was like driving into a smoke screen, James Bond style.

There is a lot of blame to be put on driver inattention. But you can't blame the first few cars for slowing down. :spin:

drive a safe speed for the conditions.. like fog, if you start to lose visibility then you slow the fuck down.. sure the first few cars did it, but clearly people are stupid enough not to.. and then they run into slower cars.

:suspicious:

It doesn't take much for traffic to come to a standstill - even if it's just from one person slowing down. I know people are driving too close to each other - but the domino effect of the traffic slowing and bunching up happens quickly.

fucken idiots, just like the 3 ford trucks crashing and spinning today on alex fraser. following eachother too close, one spins the fuck out shit falling off his truck and the two others colliding. Make it worse, idiot drivers, stall traffic by slowing to a crawl to check out the crash.

the real question is who the fuck comes to a full stop on a highway after seeing a tiny bit of bonfire smoke..
at least pull over to the side of the road

People panic too easily is the problem and I find that people nowadays are almost never aware of their surroundings. Maybe because of electronic device obsession? Who knows but I find this not just from drivers but also pedestrians, people on the skytrain etc.

People have ZERO forethought of their actions.

Took me an extra hour and half to get back yesterday morning.

Followed the detour routes but the roads weren't meant for 18 wheelers and just clogged everything up.
