I wonder why aquaponics isn't more prevalent. I'm sure these are figures used on the outer edge of things (otherwise PSA's such as this one wouldn't sound as good), but the 5:1 ratio for farmed fish seems a little off. There are tons of fish out there that don't require being fed other fish and instead can be fed things like pellets or forms of plant life.

So much food gets wasted in Europe alone... in fishing markets if some sea food doesnt meet a certain price, they throw it away to keep market prices high. Its not even given to the poor or starving hungry.
They actually add bleach to some of it too so that no one goes to retrieve it.

overfishing is a prime example of international tragedy of the commons

it's a grand problem, and we have the solution, but countries' inability to agree/work together and enforce regulation will ultimately lead to depleted stocks

that's the sad truth

It's a shame, but no one's going to do anything substantial about this issue. You'll need a tipping point. When local fishermen from island nations are constantly coming back with empty nets, they'll resort to criminal activities, and it'll just create a domino effect of criminality.

Just need a critical mass of what happened in Somalia's waters that led to piracy.

Its good to know that awareness campaigns bring to light the negative effects of over fishing on human fish consumption, however, its also important to note that without fish, other ecosystems will face starvation and die. In the end, the oceans face the threat of becoming aquatic versions of arid lifeless deserts, incapable of sustaining life.
