Holiday Ham (Where & What)

Looking to make a Honey-Glazed Ham for Christmas this year. This will be my first time. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy them? And What type?

Bone-in?
Boneless?
Smoked?
Honey?
Spiral Cut?

I don't care for organic or hormone-free. Looking to pay $3.50/lb max.

I'm thinking Costco right now. They probably have the best quality for the price. Or perhaps a butcher shop?

Costco spiral.

Fucking LOVE it. Cooking it is very straight forward and simple.

If you have less than 10 people, you'll be eating it for days.

Costco Kirkland brand, delicious

always get bone in since it will help keep the ham nice and melt in your mouth juicy

Once you have bone in and it has a little fat to it, everything else tastes like luncheon meat.

Bone in from Costco fucking delicious fuck turkey I'll take ham any day

Also I think when cooking ham less is more, my grandma usually just does a simple brine for a couple days the cooks slow with a nice glaze

Anyone able to locate the Spiral Cut ham from Costco?

I found one that was pre-sliced and hickory smoked. It didn't say it was bone-in but I assume it isn't. It was wrapped in red and gold tinfoil and the brand was Costco's Kirkland.

Was that the one or is there another one?

ugh..got the glazed spiral cut, 20 dollars. pretty big piece.

Leftovers and man, struggling now. That's alotta ham.

Make split pea soup with the rest.

Hondaracer 12-27-2013 06:06 PM

Only problem with the spiral cut is that the cuts are so big you need to cut them in half for sandwiches etc

Ham was amazing. Will buy again next year. Damn! It was nearly zero prep work, with maximum taste. The ham I had actually had bone in it. Awesome.

bcrdukes 12-27-2013 11:45 PM

Is this Costco spiral ham seasonal or is it available year round? (I don't go there very often.)

I'm not sure, but my calculated guess would be that it's only available during major holidays (Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas), because the Kirkland Ham had Holiday wrapping around it.

punkwax 12-28-2013 09:15 AM

Pretty sure they are available all the time? I buy them every now and then when I host parties and don't think I've ever left empty handed.

<$30 for a big ass ham, 2-3 trays of costco croissants, sliced veggies etc make for some damn good sandwiches and easy/inexpensive way to feed a large group of people.

subordinate 12-28-2013 02:06 PM

Not a fan of split pea.

No idea if they are available year yound, first time getting it. And agreed, rocking ham. I would get again next year.

Often the ham itself is very salty because of the curing process to make ham. I'm not sure about the Costco one but typically you need to boil the ham for a while to work out some of the salt or it will be hard to eat. I can't imagine brining the ham

punkwax 12-28-2013 09:09 PM

Costco ham is precooked. Just throw it in the oven. Bit salty for my taste, but not bad especially if you glaze it to overpower the salt.

Try running it with cold water for a few minutes, then pat it dry before putting it in the oven. It helps.

Brad Fuel 12-29-2013 11:44 AM

to clarify my earlier post:

boil it for about 30mins - 1 hr. This is just to remove the salt

Then bake/roast and glaze as you normally would
