what is this slot for on my computer
 

sorry but i am a total newb when it comes to computer and i have a dumb question...

i recently moved and the lanlord upstairs has the modem and does not want me to run a internet wire from upstairs to downstairs so i thought okay whatever ill just get a wireless network card.

i went to buy a wireless network card from ncix and when i opened the box at home i tried to plug it into the only open slot i have and it doesnt fit.

i attached a picture below of the slot i have empty, can anyone please help me identify what this slot is used for?

the second photo the empty slot is in the middle of the picture.

tats a pci express slot x16 slot, usually for graphics card

the network card should be able to work with that motherboard anyways, you dont need to refund it.
try putting it into the smaller ones above it (PCI-e x1), like the other LAN card

that slots usually for your video card..it's called PCIE

Your motherboard does not have the required slot to fit that card.

apparnty usb wifi connection isnt as strong

I used to use PCI wireless adapters, but I switched to USB wireless adapters. I think you will find they both work about the same. They both have a problem caused by their close proximity to the computer case. The metal case blocks the wireless signal. I get around this by using a USB extension cable.

I bought the USB-N13 adapter by ASUS.

Works fine for connecting to the router a floor below.

Just sucks that it's capped at 1.6MB/s download at least for me.

I agree that USB is the way to go!

You will be using 1 of the 3 smaller slots on the top of your picture. Which are PCIE X1.. the long one is for X16.

PCIE can support more power than USB dongles so in theory you can get better reception.. also by nature USB devices eat into CPU cycle time.

However I would also get the model number of your landlord's router. No point buying the highest power one if you are stuck with 802.11g or b.

If you dont want to go wireless, and your landlord allows.. you can get the powerline
