The Next 3000GT:
Is Mitsubishi Getting Back into the Game?
John Hervert

Looks like Mitsubishi is playing with bringing back the Ferrari Fighter, or at least their concept designers are. Not wanting to be out done by a rebranding of their own '93 - '99 3000GT built by Russian coach builder E-Go, Mitsubishi concept designers have been quietly at work on their first exciting concept since the Mitsubishi Concept-RA debuted in 2008.

http://kimberlite-films.com/hosting/..._3000gt_02.jpg

While the concept 3000GT is drawing cues from the Concept-RA the obvious design is looking again at Ferrari. As for what is under the hood, what little we know seems to be taking aim at the Nissan GTR and going for a head shot.

The next 3000GT is boasting a twin turbo charged version of the 4th generation Eclipse 3.8 L 24-valve DOHC 6G75 with MIVEC, Mitsubishi's variable valve timing technology. Built on an extended wheel base version of the Mitsubishi Evo X. The concept 3000GT is paired with such features as Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), for improved traction, cornering, and vehicle stability, and the automaker's twin-clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission), a 6-speed manual will also be available.

http://kimberlite-films.com/hosting/..._3000gt_09.jpg

Power is expected to be around 560 bhp with 480 ft lb of torque just edging out the GTR. So the only real question, when can I buy one?

Sadly it is not a when, it probably isn’t even an if. Beginning with Mitsubishi pulling out of the WRC in 2009, then reducing Ralliart, the company’s motorsports-development arm, down to almost nothing in 2010, then killing off the Eclipse (granted not a huge loss since the 2nd generation) and now the Evo is on the chopping block despite continued demand. Mitsubishi has made it clear that they are shifting its focus away from cars with good dynamics, cheap prices and fervent motorsports-bred street cred toward an electric vehicle future.

http://kimberlite-films.com/hosting/..._3000gt_08.jpg

The company's plans are as aggressive as its talk. Mitsubishi has said it will launch six new electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles and enough conventional hybrids to put Berkeley, California into a figure-four leglock by 2015. How's that for aggressive?

So that is it? The 3000GT legacy died in 1999? It looks that way.

Ultimately, the concept 3000GT is an impressive retelling of the story of a platform that survived the onslaught of the SUV in the late 90's longer than its rival Supras, RX7s and 300ZXs. But that is not enough, this could be the car that pulls Mitsubishi back into the spot light and would help to save the Evo. Or it could be the car that never gets further than this concept rendering.

what new car that comes out doesn't take shape or resembles another car?

thumper 01-14-2014 07:04 AM

Anyone here thinks Mitsubishi is going to follow Suzuki out the door in North America? As nice of a halo car it could be, Mitsubishi does not have the money to invest in the development and production of a car that would not generate the much needed profits it needs to stay relevant in the auto industry.

pics no more worky...

You know how you can tell some cars will never end up looking like their concepts? This seems like one of those...

It is beautiful though...

:raiseshand: I have kinda thought this for a while now. Most newer Mitsu's have felt extremely cheap to me and not on par with other Japanese manufacturers. Some have felt cheaper than the Korean brands lately. I have attributed this cheapness to their crazy long warranty thinking that the only way people would buy their product is with assurance that the dealer will cover defects for a long-ass time.

I heard a crazy story that Mitsu Japan was selling older cars and re-branding them as new with new VIN's. I was told this was back in the 90's/early 2000's. I couldn't find anything online to support this though. Can any Mitsu-heads confirm this?

Too bad it's only a concept

Were there not some rumours about a possible new mr2 or am I dreaming?

There was a concept car GRMN SPORTS HYBRID Concept II | The 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011

jmvdesign 01-14-2014 07:23 PM

False article.

That concept renders were originally made as a Ferrari 612 design exercise by Sasha Selipanov back in 2010:

Highly doubt Mitsubishi will build anything close to it.

mac25 01-14-2014 07:40 PM

hope it won't be as heavy as the 3000gt vr4.

Lomac 01-16-2014 12:00 AM

Is Mitsubishi even relevant anymore?

I think Daihatsu should enter North American market.

With their full lineup(almost) being kei cars, they might do pretty well in this economy.

doubtful. daihatsu pulled out of north america back in 1992 and i don't see them coming back anytime soon. they just recently pulled out of europe just like how suzuki did in north america because of failed sales targets and finances, and europeeans love small cars more than north americans do.

You're talking about more than 20 years ago...things have changed quite dramatically.
Back in those days, people weren't looking for cars with good gas mileage. Gas was cheaper, economy was better.

Fast forward 20 years, you see a lot of Prius, small cars, smart cars, everyone is trying to go for hybrid, all the manufactures are trying to offer hybrid or anything eco friendly and cheap on gas, I see more and more JDM import kei cars everyday.

Who would have thought Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, etc are going for hybrid for their flagship cars?
Having said that, I do see your point too, selling cars is hard in this economy.
