Choking from mucus and Hard coughs

anyone know how to stop hard coughs that are loud and chest baring ?

i have been getting a lot of mucus in my throat from these strong strong coughs and was in a situation where i almost puked after showering due to choking.

i go strong on cough liquid medicine and tylonel cold pills.

they all do nothing :okay:

Is it just the cough? If you're healthy everywhere else, it might signal an issue with your respiratory tract. I'd check with your doc to be completely sure.

no, it is with the cold or seasonal flu, i had a huge fever before this and body aches. A bit of cold chills too

Ah gotcha. I'm not sure what cough syrup you're using, but you can always drop by the pharmacy to ask them for their strongest OTC stuff.

I've learned over the years that pills do not work as well as their liquid counter-parts. Everyone is different, so if it's not working for you try something else. Just remember that medicine just masks/makes symptoms manageable. The best thing you can do is let the illness run its course and drink tons of (hot/warm) water and get tons of rest when possible.

what usually does it for me:
neo-citrin for the :drunk:
and some decent lozenges.

Cut down on mucous producing foods such as dairy and caffeine

Caffeine produces mucous? :seriously:

Otherwise I agree. Cut out milk and anything that has wheat in it.

Make sure you have a strong medicine with codeine in it. Nothing OTC works as well in my experience

I think you might have Pneumonia,
I lived with that for awhile before seeing a doctor, and that turned out to be what it was,
got prescribed some Anti-biotics and it was better within 2 days and gone within a week!

What is the color of your mucous generally? Have you seen a doctor? Go have them listen to your chest. You might have a chest infection of some sort. Try looking up respiratory disorders mucous draining positions and try them when you're lying down to see if it helps. If your coughs are dry, try a humidifer to help maybe? Avoid dairy and caffeine like what others suggested as well.

I go hard on OTC medication too so just make sure you're drinking A LOT of water so you don't mess with your kidneys and your liver.

My girlfriends had a rough chest cough that felt like it was tickling her lungs for over a week and regular flu pills weren't helping. Went to see her dr the other day and he told her she has pneumonia.

For aome reason there's quite a few people I know who have it right now.

^Yeah same here. A few family members and extended family seem to have it.

There's been something about this particular flu/cold season being extra nasty this year. Personally I was sick with a cold on and off from October-December, then was ok for Christmas, then wrecked with the flu from Boxing Day to the second week of January.

It would suck if this was an indication of things to come with respect to tougher and more dangerous cold/flu seasons and not just some aberration.

If it's not pneumonia, it could be bronchiatis triggered by the flu. I contracted chronic bronchiatis from a year-and-a-half ago. If it's acute, it can be treated by anti-biotics. You may want to stay away from dairy and eat well. Getting a lot of rest alleviates the pressure as well. If you're cold, I would lean more on penumonia. Tylenol will not mend bronchiatis and I think it makes it worse.

wow my fever is back... great.... hard coughs going for 3weeks now with lots of plemn in my throat. It wants me to cough but i can and it gags me so fucking hard like choking on an invisible dick... Tylonel gel pills do nothing! so does london drugs cough syrup. TIme to see a doctor on monday i guess..... can not handle coughing every day for the past 3 weeks!

tiger_handheld 01-31-2014 08:43 PM

pneumonia/bronchiatis - only if your mucus is brown and/or green. if it's yellow or clear, its just a cough. I have the same cough and that is what my dr. said. it's supposed to "go away" (read: hide) 3-4 weeks after initial onset.

Why didn't you go see a doctor after being sick for a few days?

ya i regret that with the flu shot... monday it is #whenwillitend

also, the split / plemn is yellow / clear and white so i am guessing it is alright :concentrate:

Gilgamesh 02-01-2014 01:37 PM

^ Mucous can be brown/green, but for bronchiatis, it's yellow/white. Chronic bronchiatis is manageable. Do you have the urge to clear your throat a lot? Do you cough so hard you want to vomit as well? As long as you don't spew blood, it's not life threatening.
