NEW YORK/BRUSSELS - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency meeting Saturday to discuss the crisis in Ukraine, after the Russian parliament approved plans to send troops into the autonomous Crimea region of Ukraine.

Russia is a permanent member of the UNSC and has veto power so anything suggested can/will be shot down. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Putin directly and told him to slow his roll and he basically told them to fuck off. Ukraine asked the other perm members including the US for help as they have not been able to get talks going with Putin on their own

Chit's not good. Anyone who was paying attention saw this coming 6 weeks ago.

President Obama expressed his deep concern over Russia’s clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a breach of international law, including Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter, and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine, and which is inconsistent with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the Helsinki Final Act. President Obama told President Putin that, if Russia has concerns about the treatment of ethnic Russian and minority populations in Ukraine, the appropriate way to address them is peacefully through direct engagement with the government of Ukraine and through the dispatch of international observers under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). As a member of both organizations, Russia would be able to participate. President Obama urged an immediate effort to initiate a dialogue between Russia and the Ukrainian government, with international facilitation, as appropriate. The United States is prepared to participate.

President Obama made clear that Russia’s continued violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would negatively impact Russia’s standing in the international community. In the coming hours and days, the United States will urgently consult with allies and partners in the UN Security Council, the North Atlantic Council, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and with the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum. The United States will suspend upcoming participation in preparatory meetings for the G-8. Going forward, Russia’s continued violation of international law will lead to greater political and economic isolation.

The people of Ukraine have the right to determine their own future. President Obama has directed his Administration to continue working urgently with international partners to provide support for the Ukrainian government, including urgent technical and financial assistance. Going forward, we will continue consulting closely with allies and partners, the Ukrainian government and the International Monetary Fund, to provide the new government with significant assistance to secure financial stability, to support needed reforms, to allow Ukraine to conduct successful elections, and to support Ukraine as it pursues a democratic future.

Similar response Russia gave to America during the Syria conflict in the past.

Only difference is Russia does indeed have deep relations with Ukraine.

NATO getting involved, but only if surrounding countries are threatened. They won't do anything about Ukraine itself... It seems like Russia can fuck with Ukraine all they want, since Ukraine is sort of stuck in limbo...

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Ukraine was "on the brink of disaster".

In Crimea, Ukrainian soldiers faced off with Russian soldiers surrounding their bases while the Russian army is said to be digging trenches on the border with mainland Ukraine.

Nato is conducting emergency talks, saying Russia's actions threaten "peace and security in Europe".

US President Barack Obama called Russian troop deployments a "violation of Ukrainian sovereignty".

Ukrainian national security officials announced several other measures on Sunday:

The armed forces would to be put on "full combat readiness"

Reserves to be mobilised and trained
Foreign minister to seek help from US and UK leaders in guaranteeing its security
Emergency headquarters to be set up
Security to be boosted at key sites, including nuclear plants
Airspace to be closed to all non-civilian aircraft

Russian forces now "have complete operational control of the Crimean Peninsula."

Sounds a lot like war on the horizon.

I don't wish for a war as it's fucking useless.

Nevertheless, it might be the once in the lifetime opportunity to witness a battle between Chernomorsky Flot and the Seventh Fleet. (the two most badass marine fleets currently in operation)

Highly doubt the U.S. will pursue any military strike.

+1 more likely nothing will happen. There is nothing to be gain if the US step in. Most likely there will be restriction places on trades put on russia and that's about it.

7th fleet is quite mobile. During the Gulf war, they moved from Japan to Persian gulf after receiving order from the president. They are just permanently forward-stationed in the pacific, but it doesn't mean they have to stay there constantly. And its size allows it to carry out several operations simultaneously.

Besides, if anything can go up against Chernomorsky, it's 7th fleet. :)
