Android stick, research models MK808 or MK908.

booting up every time i want a video sucks and wastes too much power.

I already have a PC next to the TV.

I want simple and compact. Cheap would be nice too.

any thoughts on the Roku 2 or Roku 2 XD?

I use WD TV Live.

Plays everything. Network streams no problem. And extra video services like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Fairly inexpensive.

EDIT: Also, it's fairly compact.

Do you turn off your pc? If not then connect that. Those small media players take time booting up as well and some are not energy efficient...
I have a boxee box and have has it from the beginning...i dont even turn it off anymore...

There is a media player in walmart us that has a mele f10 like remote and is android based,.,price was like $75
