E-Readers - Kobo? Kindle? Android?
 

so my wife wants capability to download books from a library onto a
'e-reader'. I have no real idea on them and wondering if she's just
better off with an android tablet as they seem to be close in price.

anyone have a KOBO? KINDLE? can comment on which is better
and if it is easy to simply download books from local libraries?

Kindle is a good choice. Read reviews that kobos break down early on, no problems with the kindle in the first year of usage.

If reading is all you're doing e-ink is way better for the eyes than a color tablet.

I've got the original Kobo eReader. It's still going strong to this day, though admittedly the battery life is starting to grow a bit thin. I've taken to bringing a portable battery pack with me if I know I'm going to be away from an outlet for an extended period of time.

That said, I haven't really noticed much difference between the newer variants of both the Kindle and Kobo. Sure, some have a back light, others have 3g or wifi... but personally I don't really go for any of that stuff. 4gb of storage on the original unit is plenty enough and, just like reading a real book, I don't care if I need to have a table side light on in order to read at night. Others do prefer the backlight units but it drains the battery pretty quickly.

If you're planning on legally buying books, take a look at what's available in each book store. Amazon has some titles not available to Kobo and vice versa. Otherwise most ereaders are sideload capable.

Oh, and stick with a pure ereader and don't go with a tablet. The screen gets super tiresome if you're reading for more than 30 minutes.

I'm on my second Nook-Simple. Bought it at the time when the Kindle had that awful keyboard. I would say that the Kindle is the best E-reader on the market.

I use the Kindle Paperwhite and it's pretty awesome. Very light and works well when you read. Turning pages isn't as slow as the first gen kobo I had. I'm not sure if you can borrow books from the library though. If you have Amazon Prime, you can borrow books that way.

I agree with getting a proper e-reader. I use the ipad mini for reading and my eyes get really tired after 30 min.
