The Official Telus/Koodo Mobile thread

Though I would start one since there wasnt one and there was a Wind Thread.

So I recently left Wind Mobile, had the unlimited plan for $29. Kinda got tired of the slow data and no signal thing.

Ported over to Koodo for the $55 SK/MB plan.
Unlimited Canada wide Talk, Txt, MMS and 5GB data.
10% BYOP
Total is $50.50 before taxes.. which I think its pretty darn good.

There is a whole post on the Howardforums thread on how to get this deal if you dont live in SK/MB... pretty easy...

LTE seems decent and a lot better then Wind.

well i think its a little unfair to compare them to wind considering the spectrum they as one as one of the big 3 incubents..

i just recently switch from fido to koodo just last week, went with EEP discount plan from work.. my plan is the $62 for 2.5gb and unlimited everything from their site.. im only paying $46 before tax

i say its good, not great.. i find my signal switches from lte to 4g alot more indoors. when i was with fido where it stays mostly lte

FerrariEnzo 02-12-2014 05:28 PM

Yea.. LTE is really not strong.. right now, I lock it to HSPA, until I really need LTE...

but being with Wind since they launched (-3 months, which I ported to try Mobi) I have to say, being able to use data indoors all the time is pretty nice...

BTW, this plan is month-month.. no contract.. which is a BIG plus...

DAMN just realized my data is 1.5gb gone today.. LMAO.. DAMN Optikonthego... watching olympics...

dub.g 02-12-2014 07:24 PM

ya i get what you mean now, i was with wind from sept '12 to july '13... just decided to say fuck since 70% of my day at work i dont get reception so no point with the whole unlimited data and switched to fido.. what a relief getting reception anywhere..

i wonder though, is there a big difference in lte signal between telus and koodo?

unlike fido and rogers they exactly the same with their reception....

FerrariEnzo 02-12-2014 07:36 PM

Apparently not.. Ive asked koodo rep, BBmobile rep and others on Howardforums. Belus network is mostly the same for HSPA but not LTE, I believe telus is LTE is better then Bell..

Alatar 02-13-2014 07:43 AM

I consistently get 30mbps down/15-20mbps up for Koodo LTE. I don't think I've cracked 32mbps down though. HSPA seems to get between 11-15mbps down with around 5mbps up.

That's on a Moto X.

Take it for what it's worth, but I'm happy with my reception/speeds.

K-bad 02-13-2014 01:52 PM

ahh, i've been debating about switching to koodo as well, and i'm coming from wind mobile. Too many drop calls and no data...

FerrariEnzo 02-13-2014 06:28 PM

If you have the cheaper plans.. its tough decision... it was tough from me to drop my $29 unlimited everything plan... took a few days think about it.. but in the end, I still went for it...

If you got one of those HMP.. then no brainer.. you are already paying that much money.. at least have a good working phone...

if you dont have access to howardforums.. and want to get this plan.. PM me... not sure if Im allowed to post this on here...

Keep running speedtest, that should help you conserve data ;)

I work in the mobile telecom industry. It's the opposite, the HSPA/UMTS network is different for both, they have their own towers and sites. For the LTE network, Bell piggy backs off of the TELUS network.

Question for koodo customers.

Quote:

Pro-rated First Bills
Don't be surprised by the amount of your first monthly bill - it's pro-rated to include the period from activation to your regular billing date, plus the next full month of service. Want more detail? Check out our sample first bill.
Does this mean that on the first bill, they will charge the first month (activation date to first billing date) AND another month in advance?

If so, even if I cancel or pay off the koodo tab on the same day I activate, I am still charged for 2 month on the first billing date?

if you cancel before XX minutes or 50mb data which ever comes first.. then you wont be bill anything, just the sim card...

All carriers first bill are pro rated as it doesnt fall into the billing cycle...
If your pre-paid, then you wont get billed the extra month in advanced.. because if there is no money on your account, you wont have service...

Is Telus still looking to buy mobilicity to add to their network?

Spoiler!

haha yea.. it uses like 50mb each speed test... its nice, on koodo self serve, it actually tells you time/date of each chunk of data used... So if I ran 2 speedtest in a day, next day log in and I can see there was 2 50mb used.. haha

Unlikely to happen. Telus wants it to. Federal government won't let it happen. Won't let spectrum allocated for new entrants to be absorbed by incumbents. Which is funny, since Rogers was apparently(has already?) made a deal with Shaw to take over their AWS spectrum from the auction.

No. Telus has no plans on it as far as I know. BUT Telus is bidding on the 700MHz network and his highly optimistic as it started expansion plans last year in all new sites.

GLOW 02-16-2014 10:42 AM

ya i was reading about that. just curious as it seems feb 2014 was when restrictions were removed and i know mob is operating under creditor protection. i figured something would be happening fairly soon

FerrariEnzo 02-16-2014 11:40 AM

Robelus needs the captial to buy 700mhz.. they are competing with each here.. so every cent counts to out bid each other...

Depends on the outcome.. Im guessing whoever doesnt get the most 700mhz will most likely buy Mobi..

GLOW 04-07-2014 01:53 PM

related to telus i suppose
Telus to shut Public Mobile's "small, outdated" network - Business - CBC News

i'm thinking if anyone buys a part or all of mobilicity, this would also happen to the company
