Gumpert Explosion

Say Hello To The Gumpert Explosion: The Apollo’s 4WD Little Brother
By Matt Robinson

If you’re a fan of obscure supercar start-up companies, we have good news! Despite going into administration last year, German car maker Gumpert is back with something a little less dramatic than its brutally fast (and brutally styled) Apollo supercar. Unlike its burly V8-engined big brother, the theatrically named Explosion gets a 2.0-litre turbo four-pot powering all four wheels.

It’s a powerful 2.0-litre though, churning out 414bhp and 383lb/ft of torque. Those figures are awfully similar to the recently unveiled Audi quattro sport concept. Coincidence? Probably not, Gumpert already sources the Apollo’s V8 from Audi, and the Explosion is thought to share components with the TT, so that’ll probably be a heavily boosted TFSI engine under the bonnet.

There won’t be much bulk for the 414bhp engine to shift about either – the chassis is made from carbonfibre, while the body is glassfibre. 0-62mph takes three seconds dead, and the top speed is over 186mph. An even more explosive S version is planned, with a 495bhp, 461lb/ft 2.5-litre engine – again, we’re expecting that to be Audi sourced, in the form of the company’s warbly turbo five-pot.

The car you can see here is at this week’s Geneva motor show, and is the first completed pre-production model. Assuming Gumpert can stay afloat long enough, the Explosion will go into production later this year, with a price tag of £86,000 ($159,666 Canadian).

I dig it.

Now wonder if they would ever make one that wasn't a carbon fibre chasis for regular folk and bring the price range down.

That actually looks alright see some elements of a lot of vehicles in that even US domestic ones

I was looking forward to the Huet brothers Coupe (netherlands) it was going to have a CF body and use an M engine or something like that

the concepts looked great but their plans/company fell apart :/

Looks like something from GTA

the front looks the same as the rear, and from a distance, I probably won't be able to determine what end is the front end

Stance of the car looks horrible, wheel offset is all wrong, wheelwells look like something from a cheap 90's American car and the whole car leans forward in a BAD way... that look CAN be pulled off (ie: Maserati Ghibli from the 80's/90's or a Lancia Delta) but they certainly have not managed to here.

I personally think it kinda looks like a FRS from the side, with LFA front/back end. It doesn't look very "exotic" looking.

I think that's what they were going for, looks like they were trying to make a luxury coupe, instead of a supercar.

I think this car will sell, especially if it's made by Gumpert.
If it had a GM badge, that would've been a different story.
