At least we can easily verify an AB licence as being valid.

And ICBC has offered to hold the RCMP's hand through that process with Chinese DLs. They won't have to go at it alone anymore. :concentrate:

The RCMP's inability to verify the validity of the licence does not automatically place the resident in contravention of the law.

The RCMP knew this was an issue and by all accounts didn't appear interested in finding a resolution. They were happy to ticket, tow and drag people through the court system.

Maybe not, but they are only Charged and not convicted.... so they can always prove to the JP in traffic court their licence is valid, which to date, has not happened.

So, if someone wrote you a cheque, in a foreign language that you could not read, on a bank that had a history of not verifying the numerous bad cheques written on their accounts, I'm sure you would willingly accept the cheque for your car you were selling them wouldn't you? Need anyone to hold your hand?

They're still being ordered off the road and their car towed, effectively being punished for their actions.

I suppose you feel that the immediate impounds for excessive speed are only a charge and not a conviction too?

The tow isn't mandatory. If the driver can get someone with a VALID DL to drive their car, they will not be towed. Also, the car can be towed anywhere the driver wishes.

Like I said before, of all the drivers I have stopped that had a Chinese DL, I think I can recall ONE that had the proper documents/translation papers that would have allowed them to be driving in BC under ICBC's guidelines..... So these drivers are as "innocent" as you may believe.

As driving is a privilege not a right, the onus is on the driver to prove they are legally allowed to drive.

Please make some insightful suggestions to the RCMP and ICBC in order to reach a meaningful compromise in getting unlicensed drivers off our roadways. :concentrate:

Thank you,
