That actually makes total sense. My fairing kit actually came from a guy who would buy Daytonas and instantly convert them to track bikes. To fund the process, he would immediately strip off the factory fairings and sell them... in most cases a complete OEM fairing set w/ headlights can go for $1,000-1,5000. Then he'd throw on some aftermarket racing fairings and be set. It's a good way to fund your track bike too. I got really lucky with mine and got an amazing deal. They had never seen the street ... it would have been $2,200+ from the dealer plus the tank! |
Update, Got the bumpsticks (cams) out and measured the current shims. Now to order enw ones along with the gaskets and washers. Weirdly, Suzuki has shims in increments of 0.05mm which on some valves will put them out of spec. However, Honda uses the exact same shims for the CBR600RR but their increments are 0.025mm which will put all of the valves within the same spec as I want them to be. Update time, all the parts are back together and the bike runs beautifully. No bolts left over, no nuts missing, it was very smooth going back together after the valve adjustment but the only difficult part was getting the valve cover back on due to the tight space of the frame. After putting the cams and cam covers back on, the valve clearance was exactly how I wanted it to be so thankfully I didn't have to take it apart and refit new shims. All intake valves are now 0.006" and exhaust valves are 0.010" https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7583/...5cfc23eb_b.jpg https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8578/...2f3d9482_b.jpg The new manual chain tensioner https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8616/...a7378d72_b.jpg |
So what eBay store did you end up ordering your fairing set from? I'm going to start pricing out a new set. So did yours come with a tank cover as well? I'd like to convert over to the classic Suzuki blue and white. But then my metal tank would still be black/silver. |

Another place I found that sells full fairings is called Fairing plus (Aftermarket Motorcycle Fairings, Parts and Accessories Superstore!) but I found out about it after I had ordered my set from ebay. |

Awesome photos! |
It doesn't even look a day old <3 |
Hover bike...... seriously though, what is wrong with me? It's like I love tearing her parts off just for my amusement, lol https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...5c403fe28bffee in all seriousness, it's for new tires. |
Next time you work on it let me know, I'm trying to remove my front calipers (to remove wheel) and I bent two Allen keys in the process. |

I don't think an allen key is going to be adequate. |
So I got the front wheel back on for now. The process for taking it off is the same but in reverse, obviously. To start off, insert the collar (spacer) on the right side of the wheel and slide in the wheel axle from the left side and finger tighten the large bolt on the right side of the wheel. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8670/...111b7710_b.jpgIMG_2082 by MG Reviews, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8672/...691be5d3_b.jpgIMG_2081 by MG Reviews, on Flickr Next, lube the slider pins (I used CU1000) and leave them unscrewed. There is just enough room to get the caliper, with pads installed, past the wheel lip and onto the brake discs. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8682/...9f23e72c_b.jpgIMG_2083 by MG Reviews, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8590/...ba3f7a9f_b.jpgIMG_2085 by MG Reviews, on Flickr Then tighten the slider pins, for my bike it's 11.5 lb-ft but hand tightening works just as well. Then tighten the caliper bolts, for my bike it's 28.5 lb-ft. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8566/...7d86403a_b.jpgIMG_2086 by MG Reviews, on Flickr Next torque the large bolt to 72.5 lb-ft, again, my bike specs. Afterwards, tighten the two smaller pinch bolts on the right side of the bike to the specs, 16.5 lb-ft. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8663/...2c55222d_b.jpgIMG_2087 by MG Reviews, on Flickr Then jounce the suspension 4-5 times while holding the steering straight and tighten the 2 small pinch bolts on the left side of the wheel. |
And now it's all back together. New tires, clean and waxed wheels, clean chain, fresh oil & filter, all ready for the season. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...94253769_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...63253909_o.jpg https://scontent-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...06818383_o.jpg |
Ohhhh the glorious sight that is new tires on a sport bike! There is nothing like those first few miles or days when when the handling feels heavy and sensationally precise, direct and consistent... droooool. |
F**k that's a sexy bike. Looks great. |
And new body work arrived. "Old & busted. New hotness." https://mgreviewsblog.files.wordpres...3210727453.jpg https://mgreviewsblog.files.wordpres...74588138_n.jpg |
She is in storage as of today, last wash, last time I see her for the year :( https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...33562634_o.jpg |
When do you usually bring her out for the new season? That was a great closing shot to 2015 BTW. |
This year I'm aiming for mid to late March |
Got new chain and sprockets for the bike. Left the gearing stock. https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...96&oe=57EE0822 https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...20&oe=58078632 https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...7b&oe=57E92CC7 https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...de&oe=57F18F10 Maybe it's in my head or maybe I did something while disconnecting the shifter and clutch linkage but the bike just doesn't feel the same when shifting. It feels more "notchy". Still runs and shifts without any problems but it just doesn't quite feel the same. |
This relationship is now over. Last night I sold my second ever bike. I had a great 4 year relationship with this one. We went on long trips together through the mountains and along the beaches. We held each others hands and were there for one another during the rough times and the good times. I will miss her from time to time but I can take comfort in the fact that she went to a good home. https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....3d&oe=594043FA |
And the story reaches a happy conclusion. I can't wait for the new journey to begin. |
So what are you thinking of picking up next? |
