School me on camcorders?

I'm not sure how many people even buy these things now but I'm in the market for one soon.

Budget - Under $800
Reason for Use - Having a baby soon so want to capture all the special moments
Prefer to have - Good battery life

Thanks in advance!

Get a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. Will so great video and will take great photo's too. I would go with a compact Mirrorles camera because most people don't want to carry a large camera.

Will you REALLY use the camcorder?

I was in your exact same situation - got a Canon camcorder because I really liked using their compact cameras. But in the end, the camcorder got very little use! It just wasn't convenient to haul around.

I don't take very many pics, but my cell phone does just fine (both pictures & video) for normal day to day stuff. My dad also has a DSLR so I bring that with me on trips.

Same. I bought a mini camcorder and 2 days later listened to my buddies advice and returned the camcorder and bought a canon t2i camera. Can take videos or shoot wicked baby photos. Don't think I've ever used the video portion

Hmmm thanks for the input guys. You all make a good point, I think I really need to think about this more. I guess I just automatically jumped to the conclusion of camcorder because well, that's what our parents did right? Maybe spending the money on a DSLR or mirrorless camera may be better since I can take great pictures and still take video too.

Thanks everyone!
