Anywhere in Vancouver to rent a diesel?
 

I have an upcoming summer trip around BC and AB and I was wondering if there are any places that will rent me a large sedan/mid size SUV in diesel? (4 ppl and a pie of luggage and cooler etc/

I know that many offer turbo vehicles, but if get is currently at 1.51/litre, I can't see it getting much better this summer!

Your trip around BC and AB will be ~2500km? The cost savings are so negligible over that it makes zero sense.

Pretty sure its only 1.51 down in the lower mainland. Outside of that further into BC it will get cheaper and in AB it will be dirt cheap.

No point trying to rent a diesel to save that tiny bit of money.

I've seen Tahoe hybrids at the airport before for rent, those would be decent.
I've also seen escape ecoboost which would be decent on gas as well.
Then there is always prius for rent, though sometimes they charge an up charge for the car which neglects any fuel savings. I have yet to see a prius v for rental though.

just rent a midsize small four sedan (i.e.: jetta 2L , cruze etc etc) and go on your road trip, its all highway driving anyway if anything i would want a bigger roomier comfy car like a yukon or expedition. It really doesn't have to be a diesel to be fuel efficient

If you're moving 4 people and gear through the BC mountains you want to make sure you've got decent power or you'll end up spending more on gas than if you were in a more powerful vehicle.

And yeah, GVRD gas prices are the worst in the west followed by the Okanagan. In Alberta gas is basically free.

If you're concerned about money, book now.
As soon as may 1st hits most places bump up their prices a lot

Going rate for the SUV you want is $100/day if you book it a few weeks in advance; if you book it now you'll get it for the $50-$70/day range -- that's more savings than any diesel/hybrid will get you

Also, try to find a place that doesn't charge an 'out of area' fee for alberta -- it's usually $10-$15 additional/day.


tl;dr
- book ASAP
- book with a company that allows unlimited mileage, and doesn't charge extra for taking the vehicle to alberta

both the above tips will save you $$$$

My gas SUV gets 30mpg and my identical SUV with vw turbo diesel swap gets 45mpg. Even with the diesel prices more expensive it's still about 40% savings. This is an extreme comparison and I bet that if you can find a diesel rental the fuel savings would be far less than the extra rental cost.

Naw, not really concerned about money so much, just wanted to try a diesel on a road trip. Never thought of the hybrid idea tho

Just booked with discount/Thrifty for a Sonata/Fusion etc with unlim mileage for 260ish? hopefully they'll give me the option to upgrade to something with hybrid etc.

Would a current 4 cyl with 6 speed auto suffice? or should I just insist with something that has at least a 6 cyl?

I had a 300C on a trip thru there a couple of summers ago. Was funny watching the Civic's wiz past me down the mountains, but when going up my car hardly went over 2,000rpm's and stayed at the head of the pack.

Depends on the car, but if you're into large sedan or SUV territory I'd go for a V6. I've taken a 2007 Rav4 with the V6 loaded with 3 people, a dog, and a pile of gear from Kelowna to Van and back and it didn't seem to give a damn, low revs and no issues on hills. On the flip side I've seen a 2010+ Aveo struggling on the Coq with just 2 people and a small bag of clothes.
