Recommendations for a cheap beater

Been wanting to learn stick for a while but never got the oppurtunity to. You guys have any recommendations (craigslist ads etc) that would be a good car just to learn in and hopefully be able to sell after? Looking to spend under a 1000 but I also want to be able to sell it to get half my money back at least afterwards. Thanks

Had one as my first beater.. Best car ever. Cheap on gas and run like a tank. Dem Flames!

I had mine for about 3 years, never locked the door, never got broken into.

EDIT: Whoops didn't see your 1 grand budget. It's worth the extra couple of hundred and you could haggle the guy down to 1.3k.

+1 for Honda Civic. Buy a cheap one, learn stick, clean it up real good, then flip it for a profit. It's not hard IMO, as long as you post decent pictures you're already ahead of 80% of Craigslist...

there isn't any one magic beater.

that being said older vw's are really fun to drive and "feel" faster then they really are. and they fit the classic cheap on gas, parts o'plenty and you can rev it a decent amount.
