After several test drives, I've decided to buy a MK6 GTI.

Why not the MK7?

I test drove it this weekend, it's brilliant in every way. Totally loved it after driving it but after looking at the final out-the-door price, I just couldn't do it. After all the taxes and fees, I was looking at around $42k for a 5-door DSG, which is insane.

Why not the Mazda 3?

I drove it too but after driving the GTI, it felt so much weaker. The GTI really flies when it wants to but does 1200rpm in the city at 60km/h. The Mazda does city well too but doesn't really punch it like the GTI on the highway. The interior is very, very nice and the tech is awesome and easy to use but doesn't feel as well made as the GTI. Cabin noise and ride comfort is also just that much better in the GTI. Of course, the Mazda is considerably cheaper but not by much when you get the 2.5L engine. Taxes and fees would bring it to the $35k-ish.

GLI is gorgeous but the interior isn't as nice as the MK7 GTI and somehow through hatchback wizardry, doesn't hold as much stuff. They also don't have the new MK7 engine in this thing yet.

So I'm trying to find a used GTI in the 2010-2013 range now, which I can probably find fully loaded for $30k after tax if I'm lucky. I didn't see enough of a difference in the MK7 to spend the extra $10+k and since the MK6 is a...mature platform, accessories are so much easier to come by.

If someone has a 5DR DSG in any color but red....

Hopefully you still haven't chosen your new car yet. Just like you, I love every bit of the new mazda 3. But Zac the test driver has mentioned a common problem about the new 3. Both the 2.0 and 2.5 have radio problems. So if you are one the guys who listen to radio often, make sure to check out the radio and see if it's working alright in the new mazda 3.

Is it just me or does the wheel look too big in the picture? I recall they look great in person though

Ronin 06-05-2014 08:10 PM

I didn't like them at first but they're growing on me. They do have curb rash though, which isn't a biggie to me since I thought about buying other VW OEM wheels (Serron = Autobahn ed. wheels, Austin = 2015 GTI wheels) but maybe I'll keep these for awhile and use the money for other things instead.

Currently planning on OEM Euro tail lights, stage 1 tune, intake maybe and a deck + at least a subwoofer. Sub might be first if I can find one that can just be bolted onto the stock stereo system. It sounds good except for the base. I don't want stupid ear shattering bass but the stock is rather high and rattle-y.

Wheels look about the right size to me. Put 18s on a tiny car and that's what happens.

Test drove this the other day for kicks since I was at the auto mall insurance place getting a plate and saw it there. It's even cooler looking in real life. The interior is trimmed in bright fuck you orange.

It's amazing. It's about a fun a car to drive as I've driven in a while. The chassis feels solid as hell and the price isn't bad.

But why not? It's not great for long distance highway driving, IMO and well, I'm 31 now. If I was...uh...18 when I first joined RS then this would be perfect but I feel a little silly in it. It's a bit too much boy racer. I want a little more refinement...GTI is already at the top end of the gaudy scale I'd consider (one of the reasons the WRX was cut real early). Great car but not something I'd want a as a daily driver. It would be a toy car I'd buy when they hit the used market and driven on weekends.
