Granville bridge bike lane thoughts?

Personally I can't wait until the day comes where anyone can ride anywhere he or she wants on a bike without the fear of being run down by a Lamborghini with an N on the back

i like cycling, im sick of cyclists.

is a better idea on granville than burrard.

correct me if i'm wrong, but granville bridge isn't a bottle neck, burrard is.

a MUCH better plan needs to be thought out and introduced which encompasses an overall better integration of roads, transit, and bikes rather than this piecemeal crap gregor's pushing at great expense and inconvenience.

You are absolutely right. I still can't believe the downtown core does not have a master plan for transportation and infrastructure.

The thought of trying to keep up with future demand or deal with the cities transportation needs while winging it, is absolutely ridiculous. They need to hire a professional consulting firm that can put together a baseline for them to expand the DT core over the next 10 to 20 years. Obviously not everything will work out exactly as intended, but the general direction offered by the master plan is more than worth the investment.

I use the bike lanes. They're great. But I also wish I could park my car on Hornby, or make a right turn SOMEWHERE along Dunsmuir.

I like the bike lanes; I use them. But I also know how to navigate traffic on a bicycle. It's a shame that there aren't other things being done to promote bike usage, other than clogging up major routes where cars are the best option.

I will also mention that I use the bike lanes year round. I use the Hornby one to go the gym, and in the winter, I'm often THE ONLY ONE in the lane, from one end of downtown to the other, and they are full of wet leaves.

In my opinion, it's ridiculous to expect people to bike to work when it rains 8 months out of the year.

Car lanes>Bike lanes

+1

Rode my bike once on the granville street bridge. Never again... never felt like getting killed so many times in such a small time frame.

I want them to install bike lanes on a budget -- i.e. just put down some pylons and run some yellow "caution" tape from pylon to pylon.

This is I think the biggest problem with bike lanes in Vancouver, the return on investment is terrible for such a vast majority of the year.

If the bike lanes were not impacting regular traffic routes, thats one thing, but the fact that we are actually eliminating lanes for vehicle traffic to build something that realistically only will get used 4 months out of the year is makes them an overall detriment to the cities transportation needs.

radioman 05-29-2014 10:00 AM

So when can motorcycles start filtering like bicycles :P

bcrdukes 05-29-2014 10:05 AM

I'm just going to throw it out there, not to disagree with anyone, but more so to offer a different angle on the subject.

Because the City of Vancouver (and the GVRD in general) is growing immensely, space has become an issue, particularly in the Downtown core. We all dislike driving there and parking is expensive. The growth cannot be stopped, but perhaps contained to a certain degree.

Is it likely that the city planners are perhaps trying to add bike lanes in order to deter the flow of traffic in and out of the Downtown core? Call it traffic optimization if you will, but it's certainly something to keep in mind. Creation of bike lanes and dedicated transit lanes are some of the few alternatives.

Speaking for myself only, I dread when someone asks me to meet them Downtown. I won't drive (because I hate getting in and out of Downtown) so as an alternative, I take public transit or ride my bike (yes, hipster much.) It's a win/win situation for me because:

1. I get to ride my shitty hipster bike
2. I don't have to live with the headache of having to be stuck in traffic.
3. It's a nice alternative. Get out there and get some fresh air.

Have you noticed the largest bike lane projects all funnel to the north Kits area? Maybe because Gregor and his bum buddy Chip wilson want bike lanes. Robertson puts bike lanes in for his own convenience. Wilson doesn't like the traffic in front of his 1000 trillion dollar mansion that looks like a correctional facility? Its ok, we can just turn point grey road into a bike lane. These fucks don't even try to hide how sleazy they are. If my government is going to steal my money and fuck me in the ass I'd like them to at least tell better lies to me about it.

they just need to ask a mainland european city's planning department.

brussels, amsterdam, a number of german cities - all bike centric / transit centric and it works - easier to take transit than your car, and that's what we should have - a real plan. won't happen in vancouver, too weak of a government

I wonder if tolling drivers to enter downtown Vancouver would help ease traffic congestion. This system (which also considers residents, improvements in public transport, etc) is used in other parts of the world to do the exact same thing; and it works.

knight604 05-29-2014 10:42 AM

Stfu.. tolling drivers to enter downtown. Get fucking insurance implemented for cyclists first then we can talk about tolling them asshats.

yray 05-29-2014 10:47 AM

More random as fuck pedestrian crossings on Granville Bridge :heckno:

StylinRed 05-29-2014 04:06 PM

i dont mind the bike lanes however i can't stand the no right turns because of the bike lanes it's so infuriating especially with the construction turns what should be a 5min drive into downtown become a 15min drive

that's only viable IF there are sufficient transit options. you can't toll without a realistic option to avoid the toll.

rather than tolling, a better idea would just be to raise parking rates as a deterrent to going downtown, this is with the caveat that there would be proper transit options, and the caveat that this additional revenue goes towards improvements to something, not the city's black hole of money that goes on improving gregor's life

JordanLawrence 05-30-2014 11:24 AM

nope dont like it

you! 05-30-2014 02:27 PM

i dunno when these idiots are going to understand that this shit is not worth it and is a complete waste of money on a place where u only get 2 months of bike-worthy weather
