Is this new tactic for dealership to get you into new car?

dealership I bought my car 3 years ago called me.
saying there is someone looking for used car, same trim/colour/year etc..as one I have.
but they dont have one in their used car inventory so they looked up customer database and called me if i'm interested in selling my car.

Has anyone heard this tactic before?
is this for real?

thanks

Offer them double the KBL price and try :fullofwin: and see how much they want the car.

bcrdukes 06-04-2014 02:21 PM

It happens sometimes. There were a few people on RS who have done this.

white rocket 06-04-2014 02:29 PM

Not uncommon. What car do you drive? Is it a unique(ish) vehicle or trim level? They might legitimately have a client for it. Quote them a price that you would let the car go for and see what they say. Report back.

This was happening 10 years ago. Dealers do mass calls or mailings saying they have someone interest din your vehicle to get you into the store.

evil_jigglypuff 06-04-2014 02:46 PM

it's just a tactic to get people to come into the dealerships to convince you to buy another from them. But like a few that had mention already, its not uncommon. years ago someone had called me to trade in my vehicle for a newer vehicle. they were offering me ridiculously low for my car and i just said no.

Family has had this happen to us multiple times as multiple dealerships have said our cars are perfect to sell used.

Just got into a 2014 Tiguan from our 2012 Tiguan. One trim level up, more features. Same price from the dealership. Worth it in that case.

Last year they made a similar offer to a 2013 Tiguan that was slightly used, but would've cost more. Didn't take the deal then.

There was another RS member who had I think a Cadillac Escalade or something similar.

It was a lemon or he had lost a lot of money on it (at the time.) Tried to get rid of it through one of the local auctions and Craigslist, got lowballed but low and behold, a dealership from the US (Washington) bought it so there was a happy ending to it!

I remember a long time ago in 2000 I was with a friend looking at ITR's at Burrard Acura.

I owned (and still today own) a 95 GSR and the salesman recommended that I "upgrade" my car to the Integra SE which was a base model with different rims and a spoiler. Yeah right, no thanks.
:heckno:

Toyota tried this with my Dads Tacoma. They wanted to buy it back from him. It's 1 year old and Standard.

The deal wasn't sweet enough

hirevtuner 06-04-2014 04:07 PM

i thought they mainly do this tactic with luxury manufactures like mercedes or bmw to target the rich c-lais that need to upgrade their 2-3 year old ride

supafamous 06-04-2014 04:27 PM

I get letters from my local Acura dealer expressing an interest in my low mileage TSX. My car is well maintained, low miles and in great shape so it makes sense that they could re-sell it for a mint but I bet all local Acura owners with cars that aren't too old get that letter too.

Great68 06-04-2014 04:31 PM

Mazda sent me a few letters like this. They went into the trash, there's no way they could get me into one of those smiley faced abortion Gen 2's.

freakshow 06-04-2014 04:31 PM

This is a sales tactic.. there are probably very few scenarios where you actually come out on top.
If you intend to upgrade anyways, you'll be better off selling then buying on CL.
If you weren't intending to upgrade, there's no way they're going to buy your car and give you something better for the same price. Unless you mean the same monthly payment on a new term.. which means you're paying more.

Throw out a number
Report what happens

simple as that

I only went to service at this dealership. Didn't buy my car there. They sent me a letter asking if I want to trade it in because there's some sort of demand for my year and trim.

ImportPsycho 06-05-2014 10:25 AM

ya didn't make any sense to me.
ok so the car they want is dime a dozen, Kia Sorrento lol
not some mercferrariborghini
Sure my trim is SX which is fully loaded with 7 seaters, so probably not easy to find.
but it's not something anyone would go outta their way to find one, can easily find other brand/same spec at similar price....

thumper 06-05-2014 12:10 PM

the place where i bought my old car sends me a letter along these lines every year. so does the dealer i went to get it serviced. i called both of them to tell them i no longer have the car but the letters keep coming in... but it's okay because sometimes there are prize draws, i got a free lunch voucher once, and the odd VIP invite to look at a new model that is not available to the public yet :censored:

With my dealer we did have people who come in looking for our used inventory stock and if we don't have what they're looking for try to source it out through a current customer. All dealership will do this for their customers.

Indyjones 06-06-2014 09:34 AM

One of my co-workers had that happen to him...he was really excited that the dealership wanted his used car back (for another customer, who was looking for precisely THAT car) and would give him a new one for a great deal.
Suffice it to say that I didn't want to spoil for him. He already got the new car, and was happy...
