Question regarding two-laned left turns

I have a question regarding this specific corner.

Coming off of NB highway 1, turning left onto 1st ave.

Does the car on the left lane go onto the first or second lane of 1st avenue?

Normally I turn left into the left most lane on other streets, however, that dotted line throws me off. Of course the right lane offramp turns into the third lane on 1st avenue.

I usually turn into the 2nd lane on 1st ave coming from the left lane offramp because I'm following to be immediately beside the dotted line the whole way around the intersection.

Thoughts?

(Sorry if this is the wrong subforum, don't post threads much)

I take the offramp everyday.

I also take the 2nd left lane.

The 1st left lane is for 1st Ave Wbound overflow.

So, say you're coming off the offramp, and 1st Ave W is blocked in both Right lanes, you take the first Left lane to merge. It's for offramp congestion, so it doesn't back up all the way out into the highway.

That intersection's left turn used to throw me off as well. I used to go into the first lane and then switch into second, however now I just go into the second lane as the first lane ends merges into the second anyway

Aren't the painted lines pretty much gone now or have they recently repainted? Last time I was there a few months ago the lines were virtually gone so I just turned into the left most lane. There were tons of cars in the right left turn lane turning into the lane I should have turned into. No point chancing a collision.

I go in the outermost left lane since most of the time, I seem to attract retards that go in the middle lane instead of the right lane.

safe bet leftest lane, technically should be middle lane.

thanks guys. i take this exit a lot since moving in the area and appreciate the input.

on a sort of related topic. i was on the left lane offramp, turned into the middle lane on 1st, and i got honked at and they were yelling at me at the rupert intersection. saying i cut into his lane. he was on the right lane offramp trying to go into the middle lane on 1st.

:rukidding:

anyways, i'll probably just take the right offramp lane just to stay out of the way since i'll be taking this route often.

The road lines are pretty self-explanatory. If you're on the left lane coming down from the off-ramp, you'll be turning into the middle lane later on. Those guys yelling at you are retarded-- you did nothing wrong.

Left into middle for me. Everyday. The right lane has a weird dip that's pretty harsh.

Left into Middle. 2nd gear mid turn, boost. Shift into 3rd and pop flames right under the overpass. Gives me a chuckle everytime, and I do it everyday...

the lines on the road indicate the lanes.. i dont find this confusing.. the left car turns into the middle lane, right car turns right most lane...

If you're in the left lane you actually have a choice to go into either the left or middle lane. Your lane opens up. If your vision is far enough ahead, you will see that the curb lane ends and there is no point in turning there - unless the middle lane is congested.

There are similar situations elsewhere in Vancouver, such as the Lonsdale exits in North Vancouver, the westbound Taylor way exit in West Van, etc although at those points choosing the left most lane will put you into another left turn lane whereas the 'middle' lane takes you straight. You can go into either, the choice is yours.

Correct me if I am wrong, but.

The black car beside the red truck could pick any of the 3 lanes, and a signal is actually legally not required to show your intent of which lane you pick.

The red truck has only option and it's to follow the same lane until clear of the intersection and then must indicate when changing into the left lanes.

Rich Sandor 06-20-2014 01:08 AM

^ right.

The only caveat is that if say, the black car wants to go to the middle lane, but is slowwww to move into that lane, the car behind may try to pass.. using a signal in this case may prevent an accident.

They need lines like this on Garden City, where it merges onto Sea Island. So many times the left lane goes to the center lane and stays there making it difficult for the right lane cars to merge if they need to use the Oak St. Bridge.

Wouldn't matter because Richmond :derp:
