Building your portfolio

How is everyone here building their portfolio? I want to start concentrating on portrait and lifestyle photography. I've done a few paid shoots but I don't feel like I'm generating enough content to really build my portfolio up. I've tried advertising Time for Print on Model Mayhem but haven't gotten any solid responses. Any fellow photogs wish to share some tips?

Shoot, shoot and then shoot some more.

And pick only your best pictures. Seems pretty straight forward. ;)

Finding subjects to shoot is the hard part. Is there a service that hires a model for a group of photographers?

Do you have any friends that are aspiring actors or models? Start with them. Have them introduce you to their friends?
