Famous 2nd Gear Grind I got a 2005 rsx type s. As many of you guys know the k20 tranny is famous for having 2nd gear grind and pop out. I picked up the car a couple months ago, and 2nd gear always felt a little funny. Half the time it shifts smooth and no problems, but have the time I can feel just the smallest amount of resistance. It's hard to explain. Anyone that has felt it before knows what I'm talking about. 2 weeks ago I was driving home from work, and I always let my car warm up for 5 minutes. I stopped at a red light and sat there for a couple minutes. When I popped it into 2nd gear it popped out and grinded. This is the first and only time I have had this happen, hopefully my last. Are there any solutions to fix this? I don't ever want to hurt my baby like that again. I love my car and I plan on keeping for a long time. I want it to last, I baby the shit out of it. Weekly washes, monthly wax. |
I've heard that using gm's syncromesh manual trans fluid can help. Do some googling, there's a lot of info on the matter. |
My T5 2nd gear is a little jammed up, need to double clutch sometimes. I guess try your best to feel the gears meshing and shit when you shift? I only grind like 1/20 shifts now |
Very common problem with K20 6sp. Check your clutch bite point and make sure it isn't too low. DIY: 2nd GEAR GRIND FIX!!!!- Clutch Adjust - 8th Generation Honda Civic Forum While you're at it, check under the hood and give your clutch fluid a look. Make sure it's well above minimum and fairly fresh. Swap out trans fluid with Syncromesh. |
I had this problem on both my base and type-s. I found that AMSOIL Syncromesh works best. |

Thanks for all the help. I was planning on replacing all my fluids including tranny and coolant before winter, and then storing my car till spring/summer. My clutch, and clutch fluid is fine. That was the first thing I checked. This only happened once hopefully it won't happen again. It's just annoying, because at times it shifts really smooth, and at others you can feel just the smallest amount of resistance. |
