Microsoft Acquires Minecraft's Studio $2.5B

:fulloffuck:

BBC News - Microsoft pays $2.5bn for Minecraft maker Mojang

with the rise of mobile/facebook games I think the film industry will take a backseat to video games in 10 years

Minecraft already seems established...any ideas how they came to this figure?

Now I'm very curious how much they paid to get Tomb Raider sequel on XBOX...damn those devs must be laughing their way to the bank even if thousands of fans are upset

I would actually say that 2.5 billion is a fair amount for something like Minecraft. You're pretty much buying the Lego of the next generation. It appeals to every age group and is actually very fun to play. I don't remember the exact figure but it's something close to 100 million people playing the game?

Microsoft can also do really great things with Minecraft, they've got a bunch of game development studios that can help develop the game out further. It's built using Java and if they could use something like C++ they could increase the performance by a lot. I mean the game doesn't really require anything crazy... but anything other than Java please.

I think there are 3 shareholders from what I read earlier?
1) Mojang (head developer) ~71%
2) his partner ~20ish?
3) the CEO ~the rest

These guys are pretty much set for life!
