SSD in Raid 0
 

Currently have the Crucial MX100 256GB, thinking of picking up the Crucial M500 240GB. Will I be able to put these two in Raid 0 with the minor differences in capacity? Is it still worth it even though I'm running only in SATAII?

I have no idea whether a RAID 0 setup like this (with different drives) will work -- generally, RAID setups are advised to use identical drives.

One important consideration to take into account is, for at least some RAID controllers (software or hardware based), it doesn't support TRIM in RAID setup. What that means is, as you continue to use the drive, its performance will drop. In some cases, I have read users reporting that their drives ended up being no faster than a non-RAID setup with TRIM.

So take that into account before you decide on what to do.

Yep, both drives will work fine in RAID 0 with TRIM, however the speed will be limited to the speed of the slower drive.

I don't really see the point of running a SSD in RAID though.. Most drives by themselves are more than fast enough. If one of your drive fails, say goodbye to data on both drives.

I agree with RR that I don't really see the point of running SSD in a RAID 0 setup. Unless you are doing huge sequential reads and writes all day, the real world performance from an SSD RAID 0 setup is negligible at best, and slower than single SSD at worst.

I'd say it sums up the results pretty well.

even it is running at SATAII, you can hardly feel the difference in real life. I asked if I could run 2 Cruical M4 in Raid 0, but end up buying one 840EVO after reading the advices here.
