Speakers for turntable

for Christmas we got a turntable and need to buy some good speakers for it that aren't crazy expensive, I don't even know where to start.
it has a USB audio output and RCA audio output

What's your budget? I guess you're not connecting this to a home system, so you'll need a pair of powered speakers. You can get as cheap as $10 to wherever the sky ends.

get a hifi stereo amp which has a phono input and a pair of speakers.

Is there a ground lug on the unit?

Most turntables have them, its a way of discharging the static that gets built up on the vinyl during playback to remove static and such.

If it doesn't then its probably using a 3 prong power plug to discharge the static. Also you may be able to get away with just using a regular receiver w/o a phono input, but I would test it out first. Phono inputs usually have special amplifiers specifically for vinyl playback.

Enjoy the clean crisp sound of a vinyl record!

I believe we have the same turntable, I plugged it into an entry level Sony Receiver, it has RCA out and uses a regular wall plug so if it is the same one as mine (PS-LX300USB) you will be fine using any receiver you can find that has RCA inputs (CD, DVD, ETC.)

While on this topic, what's a good amateur setup for vinyl playing?

I was given an old collection by my uncle when I was helping clearing his place for reno.

Not looking to spend too much, but then again I don't want to get a subpar experience either. I figured a good turntable plus a decent amp/speakers setup would do? If so, what model?

Ideally I want s small setup that fits in my den

Sony USB Turntable (PS-LX300) : CD Players & Turntables - Best Buy Canada

It has a Phono pre amp so you can connect it to any system. I would go with a pair of powered studio monitors and a cheap mixer. Whats your budget?

Okay so we shopped around a little last night and ended up getting a receiver from future shop. No one helped us out there until we had already decided on one, he brought the box up for us and we paid and left.

It was an open box Pioneer VSX 1029 and was $75 off, the guy told us someone bought it and returned it without using it etc.

VSX-1029-K
7.2 Channel Networked AV Receiver with HDMI 2.0
HDMI 2.0 Compatibility with Ultra HD Pass-through
Roku Ready with access to over 1000 stations
iControlAV5 Remote control app
Powered Zone 2 Audio
Suggested Price: $549.99 - we paid around $400

we got home and the remote was missing so we called and he basically told us were sol he said we should buy a remote off amazon.
the whole thing kinda pissed me off so we're going to return it and start over somewhere else.

so tldr: I want to spend around $400 on a receiver, get shitty speakers for now and upgrade those later.
soooo where should I go to find a good receiver comparable to that one ^ for around $400 or less??

If it's strictly for vinyl playback, just find a used or vintage one off Craigslist.

If the turntable does not have built in pre-amp (anything above low-end stuff usually does not), you will need a receiver/amp that has a dedicated phono input, not just any RCA input. Alternatively you can add an extra phono premap and then you can use it with any RCA input.

The pre-amp not only amplifies the lower-level phono output but also applies RIAA equalization, so you can't simply plug it into any RCA input and crank up the volume.

Same thing happened to me with remote. I demanded they give me a compatible remote. They ended up giving me a mid grade harmony remote the one with the screen and fully programmable. Plus they took an extra 10 percent off the receiver for wasting my time. So try!!

Aw really? They didn't do anything for me...they basically said it's our fault for not checking and they gave me my money back (which is fine) since apparently they have a really bad rep

A lady I work with bought an HP computer there, she got home and noticed the side panel was misaligned so her husband took it off and was just going to match it up and put it on properly but he noticed the internals were a mess and it was a different brand than HP so he called Future shop and they denied the whole thing told him it's not their problem.
He called HP head office and they said they would NEVER use those internals or anything other than their own so they sent him a new computer and asked that he mailed them what he had.

long story short HP ended up suing future shop and who knows how many people got ripped off by the little scam they had going on.

Also, my boss bought a TV from the same future shop on boxing day, he unwrapped it at home and it was completely smashed.. so we learnt our lesson.. stay away from Langford & Victoria Future shop! They bought out best buy a little while ago and I guess its just gone to shit since there isn't any competition.

but it all worked out for the best
We went to London Drugs and bought and Onkyo txs-333, it's perfect for what we need and it was on sale so it was cheaper than the panasonic one and apparently better quality. Plus we have enough left over to buy some polk speakers

A chunk of my vinyl is 30+ years old (from my moms collection) and some of my favourite albums are lunched but since I saved money on the receiver I "splurged" and bought weird scenes inside the gold mine a compilation of the doors
I need to start replacing my hooped records with new ones, there's a Pink Floyd album (A Nice Pair) e.u. vinyl... ugggh its $86 though

Be sure to research where the master for the vinyl was sourced from for new presses and albums. If the vinyl is cut from a digital master, there is little to no inherent sound quality benefit to getting the vinyl version short of the larger artwork and more tactile playback procedure.

How can I find out if it's cut from a digital master?
I want to buy Endless River on vinyl when they get their shipment what would I look for ?

all I can really find is:

Quote:
Analog masters are critical, but according to United’s FAQs most of their customers deliver audio on CDs. This means the source material for the pressing is actually a digital master (not necessarily compressed, but still digital). It may not matter though, since the industry quickly adopted digital technology as it became available, and advances are regularly improving sound performance. Debates continue and sources have different opinions. Readers can make up their own minds after hearing the facts. I prefer to know as much as possible about a release before I purchase a copy. Few artists disclose that information, so it becomes an educated guess based on past experience with specific labels and musicians in respect to the quality of the end product.

Unfortunately, supplying analog masters does not guarantee a truly analog production workflow, making this all a bit murky. The process requires more of an investment in time, people, and equipment, making it difficult to justify in the face of modern technology. High-resolution digital sources continue to trend upward, and the results among listeners are generally positive. Basically, a high-resolution digital source consists of a lossless audio codec capturing sonic information at an increased bit depth. The product reproduces sound among a larger number of frequencies than that of an MP3, the long-time standard of the iPod generation. Experiencing the difference requires spending a little bit more money than the average new record purchase. Quality Record Productions (QRP) in Salina, Kansas, specializes in manufacturing premium audiophile pressings, in addition to standard releases from thousands of labels worldwide. The price point of records on the Analogue Productions label begin at $30 and move up from there. Your ears will have to decide if the quality justifies the extra cost.

tl;dr--> they don't make it easy to find out what's been digitally pressed or not..

Just google and research online.

stevehoffman.tv forums are full of vinyl nerds that discuss this kinda thing. For Endless River being a new release I am 90% sure it would be sourced from a digital master.

Musicdirect.com's vinyl descriptions seem to state where specific vinyl releases are sourced from, whether it's a digital or analog master.

If you are just using a turntable you could go with something like this: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...ifier--300-812

and then spend the rest on some good speakers.

Aw cool, I recently moved to the island but so far I've found some little record shops downtown one is hidden away in a little back alley. They're all second hand though.
We managed to find some polk speakers for a really good deal at visions last night so this is our set up for now
