Toyota will return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2017 with a car developed and built by the Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) technical centre in Cologne, Germany. The car features a 1.6-litre turbo-charged, direct-injection engine that produces over 300hp, while advanced simulation, testing and production techniques have shaped the Yaris chassis.

hood scope = mid-engine?

RCubed 01-30-2015 07:09 AM

Glad to see Toyota returning to WRC. Car looks so dinky though. ahaha

thumper 01-30-2015 07:24 AM

it seems these days smaller is better in wrc. i'm sure if they could have stuffed all this into a scion iQ they would.

Great68 01-30-2015 07:39 AM

Yep, even as a race car Yarises don't look cool.

thumper 01-30-2015 07:44 AM

RE-Jo 01-30-2015 07:54 AM

I have never seen a car that was converted to racing spec that didn't look good......... until now....

thumper 01-30-2015 07:59 AM

If the scoop you're refering to is the one on the roof (since the things on the hood are vents not scoops), it's for ventilation for the drivers and co-drivers.

As with how it looks, it's fine, utilitarian and most likely easy for the team to work on if anything goes wrong.

Excited Toyota is making it's way back into WRC. It would be interesting to hear anti-lag out of a Yaris.

To be fair, Group B was all about cramming as much power into a dinky engine as possible. Looks came 5th or 6th.

The Renault 5 was possibly the worst looking of the bunch.

Great news, it's about time toyota do something exciting.

underscore 01-30-2015 04:40 PM

Does anyone know what level it'll be competing at?

They're challenging Volkswagen at the world level. Guess Toyota isn't satisfied taking them on in just Prototype racing.

denham 01-30-2015 08:34 PM

Agreed it's not the best looking rally car but I'm excited to see a big manufacturer like Toyota getting back into rally.

Everymans 01-30-2015 08:39 PM

There was a yaris performing at the pacific forest rally last year. It was such a cute lil competitor. It was probably last on every stage but hell, it's such a dinky and weird car so it's not expected to win. It ended up breaking a front axel on a later stage.

RCubed 01-30-2015 08:49 PM

They retired in 24th, not amazing but they're listed as novices.

first thing i thought of was whether there would be homologation requirements...
awd turbo yaris seems like fun to drive!

i think it needs more red/green castrol colors from the 90s gt-four

StylinRed 01-31-2015 10:52 AM

would be nice if this came back :/

death_blossom 02-01-2015 09:30 AM

that's great news to hear! let's hope some of that technology or engine makes its way to production vehicles.

ZN6 06-22-2017 01:44 PM

Is anyone still following this??? It's half way past 2017.
