How to hook up my own Netgear wireless router to my Telus Actiontec Modem Hi there I am using an old Actiontec V1000H modem with built in wireless feature. If I want to use my own Netgear WNR3500L v1 wireless router, may I know how to set it up ?? Please help ASAP. |
I'm with Shaw, but I'd imagine it should be the same no matter the ISP (I could be wrong). The router I use is a Dlink DIR-825 with DDWRT, and Shaw provides me with some Arris modem. Here's what I did: -Disabled wireless on Shaw modem -Disabled DHCP on Shaw modem (because you'd want to use your own router's DHCP, right?) -Added pass through to my router -Had to call Shaw to get a second IP put onto the account (not sure why, but I was told to do this) |
- Disable wireless on Actiontec - Enable wireless on Netgear - Disable DHCP on one of Actiontec or Netgear - Connect Netgear to Actiontec LAN port to LAN port Done. |
V1000H doesn't allow bridge mode unless you manage to access root which is near impossible on the newer firmware. There's almost no way to avoid double routing so you're best and easiest bet is to put your Netgear into Actiontec's DMZ. |
If you are looking for a simple setup, all you needed to do is disable wireless on ISP router, then connect ISP LAN port to your router WAN port. I didn't needed to disable DHCP on anything. If I understand it correctly, when you connect your router WAN, it should only see the ISP router as a modem that provides internet, nothing else. But if you want to set it up as access point, then that will be different scenario. |

I thought you were just wanting to use your own router for the wireless, not use it to replace the complete router functionality of the Actiontec. If using the Netgear as the router, then yeah... looks like you can't put the Actiontec V1000H into bridge mode. Apparently there is a newer Aciontec T1200H that you can put into bridge mode though. |
Im with telus, Im using both Actiontec wireless router (upstairs) along with a wireless powerline adaptor (downstairs) now my coverage is pretty good... |
Thank you for all your replies. |
Try these credentials to access the admin portion of the Telus branded routers. You can then enable bridge mode. admin:swordfish tech:t3lu5tv root:m3di@r00m! root:Thr33scr33n! |
