Windshield crack/chip - Is it repairable?

So I was driving on Hwy 91 yesterday, and a pebble or something comes flying towards me (I have no idea where it even came from). It ended up hitting my windshield and chipping it. Made a pretty big mark as well. I know ICBC will cover it if I pay a $200 deductable, but I'm wondering if this chip can be repaired somewhere else for cheaper, or if its even repairable at all.

That one crack that goes down and to the passenger side, leads me to say probably not but I'd still take it to glass shop to get their opinion.

That's not a crack, looks to be dirt from the wipers

Go to speedy auto glass, they're more experienced n can tell u if its repairable or not. from the looks of it, it's not just a surface chip, the inside layers r cracked. They can fill it in n make the surface smooth again but def won't make it disappear. U also risk the middle layer developing a crack down the road.

you can get it filled in if you don't want to buy new glass, but they don't cover the work if it cracks later down the line or completely remove the bubble inside.....Same thing happened to me but mine way worse then this...paid 30 dollars.

Put tape over it before it rains, you want to avoid getting moisture in the chip before it's repaired.

You can get it filled so it doesn't spread but the chip will still be visible.

Yup, I parked in my garage immediately after, and I haven't driven it since. I heard bumps on the road can also make the chip worse.

Thanks for the input everyone! All the glass shops are closed until Monday, so I'll have to wait till then to get it checked out.

I can fix it.

PM me for an appointment / location

Even a quick temperature change can cause it to develop a crack i.e. turning defrost on, and then you no choice but to replace it. I took mine to broco and as a curtosey they didn't even charge me to fill it. :)

Took mine to Dueck GM down on Marine. The autoglass specialist was very professional and I believe it was $30 as well.

I had the same size pebble hit my front windshield. Took it to Broco and 3 years later still okay. Plus I park my car year round outside too.

i had a chip few years ago. went to speedy glass. they charged me a very pricey $92. but their service was excellent. very fast, in and out with the windshield repaired.

they have an unlimited warranty on that specific part of the repair as long as you own the car.

This happened to my 4Runner. The windshield had a minor chip, didn't think anything of it until a couple weeks later when it started growing. According to the previous owner, it was always parked indoors and driven 3-4 times a month so never got worse. But since I parked outside when it was -5 outside and cranked the defroster to max...

...the little "chip" smaller than a dime turned into an 8 inch long horizontal crack that turned vertical (at the chip) for another 6 inches.

Which, naturally resulted in $200 down the drain for a new windshield. Get that little chip fixed ASAP!

$30 for a stone chip repair?! Holy no bloody way!

Is this at all recent?

That's where I went to with mine as well a couple of years ago. I thought it was pricey, but at least their service was excellent.

Unfortunatley, it looks like the chip has been very slowly creeping back out with cracks over the past 2 or 3 years. I guess in another year or two, the cracks will be big enough to warrant a full windshield replacement. :okay:

This was almost two years ago. ALTHOUGH i'm not quite sure if they had given me some customer loyalty price because I purchased my vehicle from there...

EDIT: NVM. I remember calling them before going in and they had quoted me $30 off the bat.

xXSupa 03-30-2015 01:46 PM

So I got it fixed at Broco today. You can still sorta see it if you look closely, but I assume that's a lot better than just leaving it. And they charged me only $25.

I find it odd how the price varies so much from different brands and yet speedy and broco and others are owned by the same company Belron :suspicious:
