best mosquito repellent is...?

Looking for the best mosquito repellent so me and my guests can enjoy my backyard patio this summer. (My wife is highly allergic to bug bites BTW.)
Living up on the mountain of coquitlam with tall shrubs around my backyard doesn't help keep the mosquito population down , and to make it worse, there's a city built pond about 100m away...

Here's what I don't want-
Gazebo- don't want this since it blocks out sun during the day, and I don't want to assemble/disassemble every night that I would like to use it.

Sprays- too sticky. Chemicals entering thru the skin etc. Especially if used frequently.

What are my best options that won't burn a hole in my wallet for the initial buying price and cost of running?

Was reading reviews on Home Depot and the brand Thermacell- lantern seems to be well reviewed. Any inputs?

Mosquito MagnetŪ Traps Available In Canada

^^saw something like that at canadian tire. Seems really heavy duty and not sure how good they really are considering they're hundreds of dollars more than "traditional" repellants.

prob the same brand, they work really well but they take at least a month until they start working. I used to sell them before Canadian tire did

Take at least a month before it starts working?

Something about killing off the life cycle of mosquito colony in the area.

So you want to keep the whole backyard clear, or just a patio area?

I heard taking daily vitamin D pills really help too

Try using a few fans? Mosquitoes are pretty weak flyers.

Yup exactly, once you kill the first cycle they are gone from the area and will only be attracted to the machine.

my friend had one of those set up at his farm last year before he got married.

it was very effective, considering hes on a swampy blueberry farm and there were hundreds of people outside. i did not notice any mosquitos
