Hip-Hop Video MegaThread

Oddly - as a young boy growing up in rural England in the late-1980s and early-1990s I fell in love with hip-hop. The passion became an obsession when we moved to Canada and never subsided through University and my professional career.

Those that know me know that I run constantly and rap fuels each and every KM (plus some sports Podcasts).

I decided I wanted to develop an ongoing thread that captures and documents primarily, upbeat contemporary hip-hop for all hip-hop fans to enjoy. A little dash of classic 90s now and then certainly won't be discouraged.

I discovered this song in the trailer for HBO's new show Ballers.
http://www.revscene.net/forums/702756-ballers-hbo.html

There is also a Skrillex remix that, by nature of the original track is probably unnecessary, but is very good.

Yogi Ft. Pusha T : Burial
Year : 2014
Review : wicked trap beat drops at around 25 seconds. Terrific video.

Really been feeling Kid Ink over the past year. This is a nice track - feels exactly like something that would be attached to a Fast & Furious soundtrack. Bonus : video is full of AJs.

I was stranded in an airport a few months ago while on business and fell in love with this song via Songza. No video yet, I'm afraid.

Yup - I adore British Hip-Hop. More than anything I think I appreciate the fact that artists in the LDN and greater UK didn't simply attempt to replicate what was happening in the US. Instead, British Hip-Hop is an entirely different, fresh strain of music.

I became a big fan of Dizzee Rascal in 2005. He and Sway really exposed me to British rap.

At one point, Dizzee was pumping out a massive chart topper annual. This was his 2010 contribution. The whole "dance" at the "village hall" takes me back.

Dizzee Rascal - Dirtee Disco

It took me a long time to appreciate Kanye West's 2008 album 808s and Heartbreaks but once I did I fell for it hard. I adore his 2004, 2005 and 2007 entries and his 2008 effort was very different.

This isn't an "official video" - it's fan vide but I encourage everybody to watch it. It's fantastic. It uses Mega Man imagery to tell the story of the video. Amazing.

Kanye West - Robocop
Year : 2008 (video : 2009)

Dropped in 1997 - rocked in my house even now. One of the best contributions to the Hip-Hop/R&B mashup category in human history.

Mase :
You know Mase huff, We Puff
We blow your house down
Bring that Harlem world sound
Directly to your town, In fact
This is why I act like that
I ain't dropped one single
And I made this money back
I rock so swell, I gotta prevail
First rap superstar dominating pop sales
You never wish me well cause it start to sell
And I live with pretty women in a Swiss hotel
And girls that mean a lot
I get em from the shop
Buy them everything they got
From the jeans to the watch
You wanna be my misses
you gotta meet me, wanna spoil you with my riches
And you could tell that Mase is real
Cause he do real things
And I make things thats average look real mean
When it comes to sex I got the real thing
So when you cover your mouth they hear you still scream

If you claim not to know those lyrics you are lying. Heck - Maestro later referenced Mariah sitting on Mase's lap in his own work.

Mariah Carey Ft. Mase, The Lox - Honey Remix
Year : 1997

I like M.I.A. - I like the mash of culture/language and I like the daring nature of her videos, especially this one - with Arabic spray-painted on dusty old structures while cars aggressively weave amongst each other.

Looking for a track to get you ready for the club? The big game? For running? While out driving?

This track hit the industry in 2003 and promptly smacked it upside the head. For those that don't remember, 50 Cent's first album was in every sense a game change. The industry had gone soft after 1997 ... soft summer flows dominated with most hip-hop albums characterized by R&B mashups (IE ~ Ja Rule Ft. every female singer ever). No Limit had faded from the scene at this point and Murder Inc. had largely dissolved. 50 Cent brought the industry back closer to it's "gangster roots"... if only until Kanye West steered it into a new, more thoughtful direction.

50 Cent - In Da Club
Year : 2003

I remember watching Hangover III, which was otherwise disappointing, but there was a scene where they took you to a hotel penthouse deep at night. Clearly a party had been raging at one point but there was this loud, deep, brooding and aggressive rap song pumping in the back ground... I was hooked immediately.

The song featured the absolute rockstars of 2012 and beyond.

A$AP ROCKY Ft. Drake, 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar - F**kin' Problems
Year : 2012
