Alberta passes bill banning corporate and union donations

Quote:

EDMONTON — Legislation banning corporate and union donations to political parties has passed in the Alberta legislature.
It is the flagship first bill of the new NDP government under Premier Rachel Notley.
The bill passed unanimously, including with support of the Progressive Conservatives.
PC Leader Ric McIver had said last week his caucus opposed the bill because it would tilt fundraising in favour of the NDP.
He also said corporations will find ways around the law to continue contributing.

?? It is actually quite a serious topic. If union and corporate donations are banned in context with political parties, will and should they be banned in other 'public' institutions? In Surrey, a year or two ago, the school board rejected a significant donation offer from an energy(related) corporation where apparently computer classes would be more modernized in a sense. As a parent having some choice, this is significant.

There is some social value created in where this money comes from. It does get a wee bit annoying when sometimes, literally, basically a computer does all the work.

In other news, Alberta will allow the formation of US-style Political Action Commitees (PACs). Don't worry, the rich and powerful will always find a loophole to get theirs :smug:

The right-leaning Conservative PAC Foundation, established last week, is a direct response to the left-leaning organization Engage Canada, which released its first anti-Harper attack ad earlier this month.

So basically everyone is rich and powerful.
