ICBC question
 

For those that haven't seen it, I posted a video of a car rolling back into me the in dangerous thread.

The result of the accident caused scratches and dings, nothing major.

So I went to an authorized ICBC body shop to get an estimate for repairs. It came out to approximately $1400. I drive an older car but it's in perfectly good condition besides normal wear and tear. Today I got a call from ICBC and asked that I bring my car in for an actual ICBC adjuster to take a look at it. My question is why would ICBC need to take a look at it? What is running through my head is that is it possible that they might consider the repair to be too expensive and instead wants to write off my car?
If that's the case, do I have the ability to not fix and keep my car?

I believe you can take a cash settlement and keep the car, then fix the damage "yourself".

First off, what car is it? (to determine value vs. repair cost)

They probably want to confirm the shop's estimate, instead of sending their estimator to the shop, to confirm the degree of damage/cost.

You can cash out your claim at a lower cost and either fix it yourself or pocket it (if the damage is just cosmetic).

It's not uncommon for ICBC to review the damage before authorizing the repairs. Usually ICBC sends someone to check it out when the car is at the shop (either because it's undrivable and was towed there, or because the driver left the car there so the shop could get started). Once they see it, they'll let you know if the car is a write-off, or the estimate was too much in their opinion, or whether there is existing damage which they will take off the estimate, or if you can go ahead with it.

sounds like it is close to a Total Loss hence having ICBC adjusters taking a closer look.

Is it my eyes or do you see the Lexus moving back at around :13 - :17 yet continue to move up? It's almost like you moved up on purpose???

Any one on a hill knows to keep extra space for this sort of issue.

Also, you start to honk at :19 a full 2 seconds later when the lexus starts moving back.

edit: its not my eyes, pay attention to the left edge of the video and notice how the video gets closer to the bumper of the Amberlamps. The ford Escape to your left stopped with enough room but you chose to move up.

He left enough room for the Lexus to roll back a reasonable distance. The Ambulance rolled back less than 6", where as the Lexus rolled at least 4'. Even when he honked there was enough time to stop.

I think OP mentioned in the other thread there's actually lots of room in between. Dash cam's POV might make it look closer than it appears. I don't know why he decided to itch forward either.

But either way, I think we can conclude it's pretty solid Lexus's fault for rolling down.

more curious about what the RX driver's reaction after hitting op. Was he a scammer? would've been better if he/she just gave you cash and be on the way....I mean now you gotta take time off work and let ICBC see it. Too much hassle for a mistake made by someone else
