Hacker Attack Reported on Ashley Madison, a Dating Service

I am surprised with the recent rah rah on Revscene Plenty of Fish thread.. no one is talking about Ashley Madison being hacked.. It will be funny if it comes out that their tables weren't encrypted. Good times for divorce lawyers!

I can see tons of people get red faced.. but people surely won't use their real names right?

Canadian company too!

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/21/te...er=rss&emc=rss

By DINO GRANDONIJULY 20, 2015

The company behind Ashley Madison, an online dating service marketed to people trying to cheat on their spouses, said on Monday that its site had been breached by hackers who may have obtained personal data about the service’s millions of members.

The group of hackers behind the attack, going by the name Impact Team, said that they had stolen information on the 37 million members of Ashley Madison and would publish the names of users if the website did not shut down.

So far, the hackers appear to have leaked only a small percentage of users’ information. They promised to release more information later if Ashley Madison did not change an aspect of its website that may seem obscure to regular users: its deletion policy.

Ashley Madison tells users they can scrub their profiles from the site for $19. But the hackers say that the user information is never actually deleted — suggesting that the hacking may have come from inside the company.

“Too bad for those men, they’re cheating dirtbags and deserve no such discretion,” a statement from the hackers read in part.

In a statement on Monday, the corporate parent of Ashley Madison, Avid Life Media, acknowledged that the site had been breached.

“We immediately launched a thorough investigation,” the company said, “utilizing leading forensics experts and other security professionals to determine the origin, nature and scope of this incident.”

Ashley Madison said that when users delete accounts, all information is erased. Still, on Monday, the website waived its deletion fee for all members.

The breach was first reported on Sunday by Brian Krebs, a reporter who covers online security.

Noel Biderman, chief executive of Avid Life Media, told Mr. Krebs that the hacker “was definitely a person here that was not an employee but certainly had touched our technical services.”

The breach comes at an inopportune time for Ashley Madison’s parent company, which had expressed interest in pursuing an initial public offering this year.

I'm happy about this... If you cheat on your spouse I hope you get caught because sites like Ashley Madison make me sick.

Wait hold up. I've never paid attention to the porn hub ads.

The service is specifically targeted to help people cheat!?

I like how Ashley Madison admits to being hacked, then asks for $19 to have your profile deleted (i.e. protect your identity).

Edit: Thanks for the clarification Jmac.

They charged $19 BEFORE the hack. They're waiving that $19 fee now.

I am still surprised the naivete people have with databases... When you delete things nearly all places mark records not to be read and that's "delete".. I got a feeling even if you pay the money, the backup media will still contain the data.. I don't think they will actually go back and delete those in off site storage?

I think that's one of the motives behind the hack. They charge $19 to delete the account yet the names/cc info isn't actually deleted just the profile?

Wait, so which is it: they need to shut down, or they need to change their policy?

They just want them to shutdown.

The irony though. They want them to shutdown because they don't actually delete the data and if they don't, they will release said data.

People cheat because we are not a monogamous species and our life expectancy was half what it is now. There is such a negative stigma towards open relationships and polyamory when there shouldn't be and sites like this wouldn't exist if people were open and honest with eachother. I have been in open relationships and I can honestly say I have never cheated. I never felt I had to hide my browser history or delete texts. Communication and trust were key, My confidence sky rocketed, hooking up was so much easier knowing I had someone to go back to if I got shot down. As a couple, you get to focus more on other things that you enjoy together. Definately not a lifestyle for everyone, but I do wonder how the dynamic of relationships could change if people didn't get themselves trapped in monogomous relationships where they sneak around.

They also got their other website establishedmen (never heard of it) which turns out to be a site filled with 18 year old chicks, with nsfw profile pics, looking for sugar daddies or by-the-hour meetups

Cheating is going behind your partner's back, lying about relationships with others. I have always been open and honest when sleeping with others. I was not describing cuckolding.

So millions of people have their personal info leaked but it's great news because we deem people who use the website to be morally wrong? What if personal info was leaked from a gay dating website because they decided that being gay was wrong?

This is fucked.

Most people don't have a problem with a person being gay but most people have a problem with someone lying.

As I recall, adultery is grounds for divorce and possibly charges in most places, whereas being gay is completely legal nearly everywhere.

^Those seem to be mostly Arab/Middle eastern/Muslim/Islam states.

I wouldn't be surprised if those states still stone people to death too.

The point is that it's ironic that a site used to lie/cheat in a society with monogamy is the norm is blackmailing their customers out cash. What goes around comes around.

Being gay doesn't hurt anyone else, in my opinion. Going out and cheating on someone that you're in a relationship with has the potential to do damage.

The only problem I have with this is they don't know why someone is on the site... What if you just signed up to research web design or as part of doing research for a paper you're writing or something innocuous like that?
