anyone willing to do my new set of lights and projectors if I provide them? I don't have any garage to work in during this cold weather. How much to do it for me? Unless someone knows how to light up the ballasts indoors with a portable battery, then I can do it inside |
You can modify a desktop computer power supply so you can power the ballast indoors. Anything that outputs 12v and about 10 amps at startup will work. |
A battery booster like the Motomaster Eliminator from Canadian Tire also works great. We sell spare 9006 plugs you can use to connect the ballasts to any power source for $5. |
Not quite a retrofit question, but how come it is cheaper to buy a HID kit than it is to buy just the ballast? |
Depends on the brand and quality of the product you're looking at. In short, there are 2 different types of ballasts: AC and DC. DC are super cheap and generally less bright than AC, these ballasts do not buzz when powered on (to clarify, buzzing means a strong ballast... you want buzzing from your ballast) AC is the standard, all OEM ballasts are AC. There's too many contributing factors to the price for me to get into right now, but if you want guaranteed performance and reliability you want OEM ballasts (though they will cost a lot more than aftermarket, but for good reason) since they last around 10+ years whereas aftermarket lasts 2-4 years at best. OEM ballasts are not plug and play though, they will require custom wiring to make work for you car since they are designed for specific cars from the manufacturer. |
