Oculus Rift available for pre-order - $599USD!! :(

The Rift consumer version was made available for pre-order today. The price was unknown until today. Most thought it be around $350. $599USD is shocking. This includes an Xbox One controller and a couple games. No word on what the Oculus controllers when those go up for pre-order later in the year.

just curious what was the expected/hoped for price point?
not sure how many they're going to sell at $599

StylinRed 01-06-2016 07:38 AM

sony didn't announce anything at ces this year, was hoping to see some details on their VR Playstation headset...and some new lenses

VR could be cool, but i'd wait for another year or two for content and bugs to be worked out

the high price is just to capitalize on early adopters, as always

I'd like to get that 360 degree movement sensor/rig + a headset to get the full experience :fullofwin: but not right away

well made zombie game with one of those?! oh baby :D

i remember that thing was on dragon's den or shark tank, can't remember which one... no investors as it was way too expensive.

Kind of sucks to be kids nowadays. The latest and greatest toys will all cost you a fucking grand. :fuckthatshit:

pherio 01-06-2016 09:19 AM

LOL @ the people thinking it would be cheaper.

This is "new" technology it's always going to be expensive, it doesn't help that the CAD is so low right now.

Backers paid $375USD in 2012 and that was when CAD was near par with USD, you're essentially paying almost triple now. Backers are rewarded because they took a chance and gambled and won.

twitchyzero 01-06-2016 10:02 AM

if this was a small company with minimal competition I would agree

they're fucking backed by facebook and have to answer to competition from Valve and Sony...early adopter premium at its finest

Only 1 JAV made for the rift... thats a deal breaker.

yah, i think it was shark tank

considering the size of it, and the cost of everything else (pc, rift, etc), the price doesn't seem that much

the only concern is making space for it :D

Yup, not buying until the pr0n industry picks up on it and start delivering some 2nd generation content. (the first gen stuff will suck) :troll:

Hondaracer 01-06-2016 04:35 PM

guaranteed this thing is going to Bomb..

it will be the second and third gen sets made by larger companies which will succeed.

Vansterdam 01-07-2016 06:02 AM

Only if you use it in conjunction with a certain personal haptic feedback device... :troll:

I'm totally a sucker for this type of stuff, but at that price with the current exchange rate I think it's hard to justify. It was like getting the PS3 at launch, then wait 2 years before anything was actually worthwhile to play.

If it had a ton of games that it's compatible with I might've jumped on it. For the time being, I'll just wait and watch youtubers complain about it until it's actually good and hopefully cheaper :P

I think OR/Facebook just shoot themselves in the race of VR.

This is a fucking peripheral. At 600USD (850CAD) it's way too much... and you'd need a computer that's capable of giving you a decent VR experience. I'd say easily another 2000 (for the bare minimum) to 3000cad (for a great exp) for a PC to run it.

I think they should have taken the Sony route... make it cheaper (although we don't know Project Morpheus price yet), lower requirement, and lower quality to get the market rolling first. Once the technology and software support mature, you can start aiming for better experience.

bobola 01-08-2016 12:02 AM

Recommended spec (not minimum)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
Processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
Memory: 8GB+ RAM

That a mid range build, $1000+CAD.

Lets hope the HTC Vive wont be that expensive.

Wormiez 01-08-2016 08:25 AM

We've got a development DK2 Oculus at work and found that even the required hardware specs will not properly run the Oculus.

You'll need a high-end gaming computer to properly run the Oculus at its required FPS. Anything less then 60 FPS, will lag and not simulate the VR experience..

yeah last time i tried that NHL VR game on Oculus it sucked when they would break away while your Goalie...... it paused on the rush and i knew what way the puck was going

StylinRed 01-08-2016 09:33 AM

The price seems fair, if they made it 599 worldwide (be it CAD, GBP, EU) like how Sony does with the PlayStation ;)

It's brand new consumer tech, its niche, its for early adopters

Like when Blu-Ray was new, the players were all $599 (PS3 being the best) and there was little to no content, Blu-Ray films were tied to TVs/Players, wanted Avatar? Need to buy a Panasonic player, and this was when Blu-Ray was 'at war' with Toshiba's HDDVD which was cheaper to boot

We see this all the time with new gear, the price might drop by Christmas, maybe bundle deals instead, and then we'll see the price drop next year or when competition finally arrives
